I work at a shelter and an ACO just brought this fish in. We have no idea what kind of fish it is or how to house it. It's already in bad shape (including missing an eye). Can anyone identify it before we inadvertently do more damage by not placing it in the proper environment?

Thought it was an oscar at first, but its not. Best thing is clean water, some aquarium salt, and maybe some live bacteria. Then keep an eye on the poor pupper.

kinda looks like a retarded tiger oscar. get it in a clean, spacious tank, with good filteration. set the temp to 80'ish degrees, add a little salt. monitor him from there. goodluck oscar.

This guy has good advice. Its some type of cichlid. Keep in large tank with hardy fish if not alone and keep a basic level of filtration on it. Feed blood worm frozen blocks or basic fish food until you can get better stuff. Look up cichlid care if necessary

Fishfag here - it's some sort of african cichlid ("sick-lid").
Get it in clean water & a good filter - keep it by itself & dont introduce any other fish to it. Stress is the enemy now & i'd keep the lights low. See if it eats.

Hey here I thought the same thing. I've seen deformed fish before, but I didn't want to say that. That's what it looks like. Also thank you. I've been keeping fish for 25+ years. It's a learning process. I've messed up plenty of times, but thats why I have awesome fish now.

These fish also need warm water.

It's a microwave fish and very replaceable like all simple animals. The garbage can is the best place for it.

Looks like a malformed Oscar. I've seen fish with those glassy eyes before and they do occasionally heal.
