What are your opinions on tipping?

What are your opinions on tipping?

I tip for the sake of being polite. I understand that waiters dont make much but why does the restaurant ask us to pay for the waiters because they dont get payed much if the restaurant itself is the one not paying them?

It allows the customer to pay based on server performance, ultimately encouraging more active and functional servers. A restaurant cannot have people monitoring every server and their activity to base the pay off of.. instead what restaurants do is treat servers like contractors. The food costs less than it would if the servers were on full payroll, and in turn, you pay the server separately from the food based on their performance.

In the end, it guarantees better service for the same amount of money.

One time some friends and I went to get some sushi. It was one of those "fill in the box" for your order. All you can eat mind you.
anyways the total was 110, and a mandatory tip which they calculate for you and it came out to 150. The waiter still asked us about the tip.

america sounds like fucking bullshit

What you are describing is extortion.
It is also employee-exploitation.
Where I live we don't tip; we don't have to unless we feel moved to.
The servers get a living wage and we pay the listed price. There's no patronising the staff.

That'd be cool, but in actuallity, most people tip based on the quality of the food passed a certainlevel of performance. With 20% tip from every customer, a waiter still makes below min wage on a slow night in the country.

Your food also costs more and your service is probably not as good.

I don't tip because society says I have to. Alright, I mean I'll tip if somebody really deserves a tip. If they put forth the effort, I'll give them something extra. But I mean, this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned they're just doing their job.

i pay for my fucking meal any left over coins might be tipped aus has a fair minimum wage where tips are not a thing

olive garden waiter here, shit job but tips vary. One fatass sneezed into my face mid sentence when i was talking. got into my mouth and fucker didnt apologize
Another man tipped me a 50 because he saw what happened.
I'm grateful for tips, its like a compliment but I dont expect people to tip me for doing my job nicely.

>I don't tip because society says I have to
That's how I feel too.

I'm going to sound like more of a cunt than I am, but I actually want a good service in return for an equal tip.
Just because Jack Astor's only hires superbabes and makes them dress like strippers, I'm not going to feel inclined to tip.

Make me smile, laugh, have a short conversation with me, tell me what you honestly think about certain dishes. Remind me that you're human.
Fucking do anything other than carry a plate and refill my water every 15 minutes and you've earned a nice tip.

Jesus Christ I mean, these ladies aren't starving to death. They make minimum wage. You know, I used to work minimum wage and when I did I wasn't lucky enough to have a job that society deemed tipworthy.

I want to tip the chef, not the server.

>here's your plate
>k bye

Consider the following:

>Your food cost is low because the employer can pay his workers less.
>The employer can pay the workers less because their tips make up the difference they would have earned.
>If no one tipped, the employees would be paid more and your food would become more expensive
>As someone who never tips, you are letting other customers pay the difference of what your meal would cost.

By all means, if your server is a dick or slacks in their job then stiff them. Not tipping on principle is for niggers.

I don't tip because servers are entitled faggots
>sous chef here

No, wrong, most waiters and waitresses are paid below minimum wage because it is expected that their tips will make up the difference. Unless the server is a real dipshit I will always tip 20%. If they are real slow with refills, or they forget something you ask for 15%. I never stiff a server, because I am not a douchebag.

I mean I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would appear to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. If you show me a piece of paper that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And this non-college bullshit you're givin' me, I got two words for that: learn to fuckin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fuckin' surprise.

This is true

I agree 100%

If you don't agree with tipping then you should not go to restaurants where the servers work for tips. You are asking to buy a service and then not paying for it.

Now, to be clear I have worked for tips, and I'm not saying that tip-workers are some poor victim class that you are taking advantage of. The truth is that knowledge of bad tippers and rude people is part of what motivates middle-class suckers with disposable incomes and gregarious attitudes to drop the good tips that actually make the job worthwhile.

If you never eat at the same place twice it probably makes sense, from the point of view of self-interest, to not tip. You will be treated as a lower priority than all the regulars but you will still receive a basic level of service from a server who is trying to coax a tip out of you. They'll be disappointed, and they'll wish they had spent that time and effort sucking up to someone that they know will tip, but them's the breaks and next time you'll move on to some other place.

If you plan on going to the same restaurant twice, though? First up, they're going to give your table to the dumbest most useless motherfucker on the floor. He is going to get everything wrong and confirm your low opinion of servers. Even if you have a competent server they're going to put every other customer ahead of you, your food will come out last, and checking on you is the last thing they'll do right before they start rolling silverware. This is what I'm talking about when I say that you just shouldn't go to a restaurant with servers. You should go to a deli, a food cart, a fast food place, any place where the cooks hand you your food and the tip jar is optional. You'll get your money's worth there. But if you're going to a sit-down restaurant, and the employees know you don't tip, then the experience you get won't really be worth the prince of the meal.

Hello OP here, i worked as a disbwasher ata restautant, usually after the day id get7 bucks tip, ehich was good, waiters always had more than that but I dont care, nonetheless, I dont see why we'd have to get tipped everyday for doing nothing special whatsoever, people already paid for their food they dont need to pay extra on top of that for someone to do their job that theyr already being payed for. Also, I agree that if anyone shpuld be tipped its the cooks, in the redtaurant i worked at the cooks got way less than the waiters.

Tip high and always vote to get rid of different minimum wage for 'tipped employees'. There is literally no reason that servers to be tipped to keep them in line and the assholes that can never help me find a product at a supermarket are not.

It's an american disease. Europe doesn't have to put up with this bullshit.

Sushi places have specail tooling rules because it's so device intense. Lots of small dishes and fast turnaround.

>Also japanses honour system rules have there own tipping system that is complex, but you only deal with that in legit places.

What's an example of a restaurant that doesn't work on tips? Also is this minimum wage thing only in the US? I don't think you're allowed to pay less than minimum wage in Canada

Tipping is frustrating because it's expected and you look like an asshole if you don't tip even if you got shitty service. If you don't tip or undertip you pretty much can't go back to that restaurant even though you enjoyed the food. I would have no problem if restaurants included tip into their prices but not like an additional charge on top of the food price. It's silly that you can't order a $14 meal with $15 in your pocket

The resturaunt I work at the waiters/waitresses make $4 an hour. Minimum wage here is $10 an hour.

it's why Lucina is low tier

/fread

This is true, and it's why server hates getting stuck with European tourists. They will tip you $5 on a $150 meal and 7 bottles of wine after staying for an hour and a half past closing time.

I wish that servers made minimum wage, and I wish that everyone tip shared (asymmetrically, though, servers should keep part of the tip they make, otherwise tips lose all their value as a tool to buy good service). Also I would like to see tip jars in a lot more places, basically I should be able to tip any person that is getting paid to put up with my ass.

Tip if you want to tip. Don't act like a spoilt cunt if you don't get a tip.
Then again I'm from a first world country that pays their employees.

you poorfags
I tip everyone
waiters,cashiers, my chiropractor
the kids who come and collect bottles for their sports teams

I tip mostly based on mood, quality of food/service, and if I can afford it, and no don't tell me I shouldn't be eating out if I can't tip

As a server, a note of appreciation is as good as tip. I am a unique special butterfly when it comes to this, but I see tip as indicative of the service I provide, so if I get no tip or shit tip, I understand why. I don't expect tip, tip is generous and more than I expect to earn. Anything additional that goes to me I am very grateful for, and don't judge the customers. However, if I am serving a party of 8+, I do expect something, because I fucking humans and pretending to be your butler, cleaning up after you, and fucking acting like I need you. I make decent wages (11/hr), so I don't need the tip such as in other places like NY that has a completely different system of wages/tips when it comes to their servers. The worst thing you can do is leave 10 cents or 78 cents just to have an even balance. That shit is so annoying.

tl;dr: if you cannot tip, write a note. If you are a large party, please tip at least 5 dollars. Not all servers depend on tip.

I work at a grocery store.
I have to deal with the scum of the public.
I have to go through all of your groceries and organize them so you dont bitch at my manager for having 1 flower touch your eggs.
I have to deal with niggers and sand niggers not even attempting to get the right product for their wic/stamps/ebtt(i phsycally have to go get it for them, reducing my items per minute.
I then have to wait for you to undestand how to use a basic tablet to pay for your goods.
I then have to deal with your grubby bills all folded up.
Not even mentioning if you have a little nig nog running around and fucking with my bags

Im surely more entitled to a tip them some waiter, correct?

Like I said food carts and fast food places. Any pizza place. Most cafes and delis. Any place where you go to a counter to get your food, instead of waiting up front to be lead to a table.

In the U.S. it's tricky, because your employer IS obligated to pay you minimum wage if you go home with less than that, but the fact that you made so few tips is also grounds to say that you're a bad server and fire you. Also, and this is shitty, but at restaurants there are a lot of politics surrounding who gets the good shifts and the good tables, giving your employer lots of chances to punish you without actually firing you. In practice it just never happens, a server that gets stiffed on one night just tries to make up for it the next night. A restaurant where servers get stiffed a lot gains a reputation and ends up having a higher turnover rate (and bad service, because all their servers are inexperienced or don't give a fuck).

don't give a shit about tipping. only came here for sarah paulson. moar pls?

They're reservoir dogs quotes you uncultured fucks

One restaurant I worked at the pool was split 70/30:cooks/servers. It was bullshit in my opinion. Cooks already make more than servers. Having been a cook, there is nothing more stressful than fucking being a cuck for every person that comes in. At least as a cook, I can get into the zone and just cook. It is hard work no doubt, but servers deal with emotional bullshit unlike any other person at a restaurant, on top of bussing. 50/50 is fair. Where I currently work its 65/35:servers/kitchen. Not bad, small restaurant, average 30$ a night, 20$ day (as a server).

I'm , and you make me realize that I misspoke when I say (basically) "don't go back to a place if you didn't tip". Sorry, it's more complicated than that. Everyone on the floor knows who the bad servers are, and everyone notices the tables that had to wait too long or sat with empty drinks or otherwise didn't get great service. They won't blame you for not tipping, they'll just be happy that you came back and that the restaurant didn't lose a customer.

But, when we KNOW we gave you good service, that's when your server will bitch about you stiffing them, and that's when you probably shouldn't go back to that place again.

Waiters and waitresses, I get why they get tipped. But why the fuck is pizza delivery a tipped job? They bring you your pizza, end of story. It's not like he comes back to your house twenty minutes later and brings you ice water, or offers to get you something from the bar.

Then what are your employers paying you for?

Love the reference

I tip because I don't want my race to be seen in a bad light. When I started working at restaurant, I had no racist bone in my body. Within 2 months I hated niggers. White people always tip 15% or more, Latinos always tip 15%, Asians always tip 15%, Niggers almost never tip.

This fact conditioned me to think of niggers in a bad light. And every time there's a crime, I end up focusing on the ones committed by niggers. This creates a cycle of reinforcement that Niggers will be Niggers.

I generally tip 20% no matter what, unless something happens that is obviously the server's fault (not the kitchen's or anyone else's), or they're rude or something, then I might tip between 10-15%, but I've really only done that like, 2 or 3 times ever. I've never stiffed a server.

It's the only profession that relies on commission where the commission isn't built directly into the employment contract. To deny someone of their pay is pretty shitty.

That said, if it's a tip jar or counter job where I know they're getting a half-decent hourly wage, I might drop a buck or 2 if I'm not strapped or something, but I don't think it's required.

I usually tip, it's not a must just politeness. however, a couple of days ago I went to a sushi place with a couple of buddies with cash and we just barely enough (broke college students) and they didn't let us leave if we won't pay the tip. we just said fuck it and left.

The whole restaurant/server system is pretty fucked up, IMO. Imagine any other industry where the employer is expected NOT to pay the employees ($2.13/hr aside). These places basically get unlimited (nearly) free labor. I don't expect it to change or anything, but it's just weird to think about.

To take what the customer puts on my belt, scan it, take their money, and put it in the bag, this is what a cashier does. Im not a stocker nor am i the manager.

Nobody tips in Japan, they have no concept of it. Very different for Japanese restaurants in the US, though.

Shit, I usually just buy a saki for the sushi chef making my rolls at the bar.

I just don't understand why I can't go get my own damn food and refill my own drink. it'd be faster 99% of the time.

Bruh, learn the fucking shit before you open your god damn mouth.

They dont get payed below minimum wage. If they dont meet minimum wage, they are paid minimum wage.
Its how ALL tip based jobs work.
Cashiers
servers
bartender
drivers
They all get their shit back if they dont make minimum wage

Health code BS, most likely.

buffet

Have you ever heard of a server who didn't scrape together minimum wage and the store made up the difference? Minimum wage is shit. It's not hard to pull it, and I promise you the employer isn't budgeting for your short week.

Learn to think through shit before you talk.
