Why do some of you think this is a shit tier album? Its slightly different from the other ones that Bowie made, but it doesnt mean its worse.
For example the single "blackstar" is really a great fucking song. Firstly the song structure that changes half way through and then progresses into a similar form like in the beginning. Secondly the instrumental arrangement is very interesting and everything fits together. The pretty odd drums (as for rock) blend into the acid jazzy sax/flutes very well + the vocals overdubs sang by Bowie and the synths. Thirdly the mix is great, honestly I think i havent hear such a good mix in a while. And finally the atmosphere of the song is brilliant: malicious, frightening and haunting - on the top of that the music video makes it even better.
Other songs are pretty fucking good as well, maybe not as good as "blackstar" but anyway I dont understand why some of you hate this album so much. I can understand that you just dont like it but seriously calling this shit is absurd. Is it because the only thing you listen to are Sup Forumsmemes or the ultragiganigga Sup Forumsmeme Kanye?
>inb4 nigger nobody cares about your opinion
Gabriel Smith
Contrarianism, suppressed death anxiety, and naiveity towards 60s/70s rock music and how important Bowie actually was an an artist.
But mostly Sup Forums is too childish and/or scared to reconcile a record dealing with the immensity of death.
James Martinez
CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW TF CAN YOU NOT GIVE THIS AT LEAST AN 8 BASED ON LAZARUS ONLY
Carter Clark
It's just retards shitposting. Don't tell me you take their bait seriously.
Samuel Myers
>ultragiganigga >nigger
Joseph Evans
> I don't like something popular > Contrarian Why do you wake up in the morning?
Isaac Green
You're ignorant if you think the some - if not most - of the teenagers here aren't contrarian for its own sake.
Matthew Adams
>It's just retards shitposting this, it's just a small number of concerted spamming shitposters. well at least they've moved on from trying to meme /oasis/
Oliver Hall
I have a friend whos calling himself a Bowie fan yet hated the album but never asked him why though. But I deducted from his musical taste its really just because a bit complex
>caring about words >being a sjw >>>/fuckyou/

Why do some of you think this is a God tier album? Its slightly different from the other ones that Bowie made, but it doesnt mean its better. For example the single "blackstar" is really a fucking shit song. The song structure changes half way through and then progresses into a similar form like in the beginning, but that's no more special than the track having a chord progression. Better progressive and developmental arcs have been employed by art musicians for centuries and by rock musicians for decades so in and of itself, this feature isn't incredible. Secondly the instrumental arrangement is not very interesting. The drums are slightly unusual for rock (though certainly not unprecedented by any stretch of the imagination) and as with the sax/flute lines, borrow musical ideas that would be seen as blase in an acid jazz record. Thirdly, the mix is shit, honestly I think i havent hear such a shit mix in a while. And finally the atmosphere of the song is awful: overblown, melodramatic and stilted - on the top of that the music video makes it even worse. Other songs are pretty fucking shit as well, even worse than "blackstar" but anyway I dont understand why some of you enjoy this album so much. I can understand that you just like it but seriously calling this great is absurd. Is it because the only thing you listen to are Sup Forumsmemes or the ultragiganigga Sup Forumsmeme Kanye? >inb4 nigger nobody cares about your opinion

Most of Sup Forums is contrarian for the sake being contrarian.

What would you recommend then?
Aaron Long
>the mix is shit Why do you think so
Julian Parker
Why don't you question op as to why it's good first? If a statement seems vacuous(there are a few that are), it's because the opposite claim in the op was vacuous. I'd reccomend listening to Blackstar. I'm just playing devils advocate.

>Why all the hate because it's overrated trash
Owen Hall
>Better progressive and developmental arcs have been employed by art musicians for centuries and by rock musicians for decades so in and of itself, this feature isn't incredible.
That is true, but there will always be something more complex, complicated or better. So calling something shit because there are "complex, complicated or better" things is stupid. The change in the song structure makes this track what it is (inb4 shit)
>The drums are slightly unusual for rock (though certainly not unprecedented by any stretch of the imagination) and as with the sax/flute lines, borrow musical ideas that would be seen as blase in an acid jazz record.
Same thing - just because there is something better doesnt make the other thing shit. Also this is not a acid jazz or a impro avant drum solo album but an altrock album - dont expect ever-lasting progressing passages of drums and brass
>Thirdly, the mix is shit
Ok, cool argument. And youre actually wrong
>And finally the atmosphere of the song is awful: overblown, melodramatic and stilted - on the top of that the music video makes it even worse.
The man had cancer during the sessions and just 3 days after the release he died. He knew hes going to die. What did you expect? A jolly themed LP with hedonistoc lyrics and all that bullshit? Its sort of a goodbye note not a birthday giftcard. Also the music video blends perfectly into this.
>Is it because the only thing you listen to are Sup Forumsmemes or the ultragiganigga Sup Forumsmeme Kanye?
This didnt work sorry.
Adam Anderson
>op didnt say why the mix is good
Like what do you want to know? If the delays, reverbs, compression, noise gates, pan, eq, fades, volume are balanced? Its easier in this case to tell why its shit not why its good
For !example! >the reverb was too long therefore it blends into the brass and i cant hear a thing
William Parker
That could be said with every board on this site.

>calling something shit because there are "complex, complicated or better" things is stupid Not what I was trying to say. I was responding to: >Firstly the song structure that changes half way through and then progresses into a similar form like in the beginning. Which implies that the progressive structure is by itself, reason the composition is good. Identifying a structural feature is not an argument for quality unless it's particularly remarkable. You gotta explain why it actually enhances the composition. >Same thing Indeed. Not sure how you read "there's better things so it's shit" again here. I'll try explain myself better: The inclusion of elements one would normally expect in "a impro avant drum solo album" is not remarkable in rock or western pop in general. There's a good argument to be made for why the individual musical ideas contribute to the song being good based on their effect on the listener but I don't think the inclusion of ideas that can be found all over other genres from the same tradition is a good argument for quality by itself. >Ok, cool argument. I just wanted to quote: >Thirdly the mix is great, honestly I think i havent hear such a good mix in a while With the adjectives reversed. I'm aware it's a poor argument. >The man had cancer during the sessions and just 3 days after the release he died. He knew hes going to die. A lot of people saw that as a dying man whose creativity had long since dried up trying to grasp at relevancy by using his death as a marketing tool but who ultimately ended up releasing stilted trite in an overly self conscious attempt at being "revolutionary" and "dramatic". >the music video blends perfectly into this. "no it doesn't" >This didnt work sorry. I agree, it's blatant reductio ad Kenyeum. I want people to make arguments they can back up. I'd be interested to hear support of the idea. >i havent hear such a good mix in a while Something must have stood out to op to make him say this.

>bowie tries to be scott walker and falls flat on his ass: the album
Leo Mitchell
Because unlike say...Sup Forums this place isn't a hug box of samey opinions? Most people here love this album as is evident from the AOTY 2016 reply based topic where Blackstar is far ahead in first place.
Owen Price
you're obviously a music student ahah
Zachary Turner
>valuing art more than food No thanks.
Colton Phillips
It's not bad, but i'd much rather just listen to Bowie's classic albums instead.
Parker Torres
neo neo Sup Forums is contrarian as fuck, no shit, get over it
Juan Hughes
Bowie's always had a strong Scott Walker influence in his music, that's not anything new.
