A man who stole a television remote has been sentenced to more than two decades behind bars. Eric Bramwell was found guilty in November and sentenced in January to 22 years imprisonment. The 35-year-old took the remote in August 2015 from the common area of an apartment complex in Wheaton, Illinois, dropping a glove on his way out. A DNA sample from the glove matched with Bramwell’s DNA on the state’s database of convicted felons, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. Prosecutors said that due to his criminal history, he was eligible for 30 years in prison. The US locks up more people per capita than any other country. There are around 2.3 million people behind bars, in state, local, federal and youth prisons, according to 2016 data from Prison Policy.

What is explanation for such pointless crime? They should have slapped him with a big fine and community service and shamed him in front of fellow residents in apartment block.
Now taxpayer has to foot bill for several decades, maybe.

America still has a massive amount of crime

corporate interest there is money in jailing americans something trump is more than happy to go along with now that he's the law and order president and has a few friends with their fingers in that pie on the development side of things

Sure, I get that. It is very costly to keep someone interned for such a long period especially over such a petty crime. That is only point I have.
On an aside, it used to be law in some states after so many offenses they would let you dangle off a rope.
Hunter Cox
Thank God the Napoleon of Crime is back behind bars. Now the American public can shart easy in their beds.

I think Illinois has quite a few private prisons as well. State and federal put a lot of these boys to work while they locked away and I know of a few companies where you can buy the product of their labor such as Prison Blues.
Michael Baker
It's the same in any civilized country. You get sentenced to 5 years on probation for violence and then continue to beat up people, you'll automatically wander behind bars for 5 years. Easy as that. Should've thought about that before getting violent again.
Zachary Johnson
Yeah but unfortunately rehabilitation is not embraced by republicans. I'm not a democrat supporter by any means but it's pretty obvious the US prison population and repeat offenders there is going to explode in the coming years.
