I'm here because one of my good friends turns out to really like metal music. naturally this made me want to try out the music because he's so into it, but the problem is I neglected the entire genre and instead have mostly listened to everything except metal music...

what are the best metal groups out there? that basically define the genre. sort of like king crimson and yes define progressive rock, and are enjoyable and dear to both veterans and newcomers to the genre
