His approach has influenced the likes of Zappa making fun of music, jazz fusion sacrificing's jazz' technicality for simpler mood based stuff, and really any artist who doesn't like sticking to just one format of music. Dude's got way too many compositions where he has tried a bunch things that did/didn't work in his time that has influenced some thing or another that has come after him.

Beethoven not only helped segue the classical era into the Romantic era, but as result is THE guy that made 'muh feeling' a thing in music. This influence shouldn't have to be explained.

In our time though the most influential musical artist is John Cage. Dude is post-modernism personified, thus he's so far all music after WW2 personified. Just look up all his compositions, the ideas he was trying to make, and how others reacted to it.

Really goes into depth on New York Music in the early to mid 70s, covering the rise and development of punk, salsa, disco, loft jazz, and hip hop. Suicide in particular were hugely instrumental in defining the punk attitude, sound, and scene, and the book makes no secret of it. They're not the be-all-end-all of punk for sure, but they're massively influential.
