The death of folk punk

Ramshackle Glory just released their final album, Plan-It-X is no more, AJJ stopped being anything even close to folk punk, ONSIND mainly play as Martha now, and current bandcamp artists (Crywank, Spaceshow) are just whiny whiteboy shit.

Is there anything on the horizon for folk punk? Or is it dead?

its always been shit

You'll find plenty with regional releases I'm sure, there are always smaller distros putting out the DIY bands that disperse from the larger collectives.

I'm in The Taxpayers, and we're effectively done too, we had to cancel our tour and didn't get to play the final PiX fest. :[

So how is Big Job? Is it worth me spending data on?

It was good from like 2004-2009 when Pat the Bunny and AJJ were at their peak, most folk punk is whiny unoriginal garbage focused more on aesthetic, Pats music is pretty much the only good actual folk punk.

Sad about this release, just found out this week that he retired. That hurt.

noel'le longhaul / loone is and has been the only good folk punk artist ever.

What happened to PiX? Is Chris still making music? Does Ghost Mice still perform?

It's fine, nothing beats their first album, but I like it more than their second one.

Aw, man, I really liked you guys.

:]

We didn't break up or anything, it's just not practical for awhile since we live between 3 states. If we do some more music in 2017, it'll likely be 4 members instead of 7.

Most members are still making music in some fashion.

It's kinda cool but yeah I may stop after the second song which actually has a really cool breakdown. I've really just gotta conserve data.

can anyone share the new ramshackle glory? i don't want to listen to the 128kbps on bandcamp, and i don't have money to support them

That's the only place ive been able to find it, it isn't on Google play or youtube yet. Maybe there will be some torrents soon they're popular enough.

On the one hand I don't want to listen to a shitty stream, but on the other hand it's ramshackle glory, they don't exactly have high production value, I'm sure it will sound fine.

the taxpayers are the shit

Except for the part where The Taxpayers are actually great

God Forgive These Bastards is such a good story and such a good album

theyr honestly terrible

Is there a reason you think that?

Chris didn't see the benefit of keeping the label going, turning the website into a tumblr, and he no longer signs people to the bandcamp. He also said the genre is dead, so I don't know if he plans on making new music. I think Ghost Mice is still going strong.

That's great, I hope to see more of The Taxpayers, or if any of you guys make more folk punk-y music, I'd love to hear that as well.

Never said we weren't!

Hey thanks! Did you ever get to read the book? I think I have an extra copy I could send you.

We tried.

Oh shit I thought you said they were shit not the shit, my bad

shittyweekend.bandcamp.com/

Here's the banjo player's project.

HAHA, I read it as "are shit" too, now I look super arrogant.

Holy shit no I didn't even know there was one. I would love to read the whole story, I always found that album fascinating.

Did you guys write all those field recordings like the guy talking about Turner cutting his hand open on bottles? Is Henry Turner based on a real person? There's a frustrating lack of information on the Web about it

Crywank's 2016 album blew, but they know that so the next one could be good

Crywank isn't even folk punk they're like anti-folk. And I'm all for whining but Crywank is just wallowing tier. Everyday is Stupid is a decent album but I can't listen to it, it's the only depressing music that actually makes me depressed.

Neat, gonna check that out.

Also, I just found out you guys released a new album in 2016. Guess I've got some listening to do today.

>It's another album of Pat taking a line directly into your soul

It's only track 2 how is it already so good

The field recordings and the interview at the end were strangers and neighbors. I wasn't there, but I think we just gave a very loose character to talk about.

Henry Turner's story is totally fiction. We came up with the first 4 tracks in a storage garage in Florida we were living on on tour, finished it over a course of a year, about half back in Portland.

[email protected] here's a temporary email address, I'll send you a copy of the book and our new CD if you don't have it.

folk punk found within

Whatever happened to the guys in Rosa? My favorite folk punk album of all time is I Mississippi You.

You've gotta be the coolest person ever, thank you so much. Not a problem to mail it up to Canada I hope? My generation has never used the postal system so I honestly don't know what issues there are with duty or wtv

It'll be a little more complicated to find a good price since I can't just flat-rate it, but I'm sure it'll work out.

by the way pats solo recording of live the dream is much much much better

why is folk punk so gay

I find From Here To Utopia sounds better with the full band, but other than that you're right

You either haven't listened to good folk punk, or, far more likely, you are unable to accept the fact that you are yourself gay.

It's all in the eye of the beholder. Also, you probably haven't heard any of the stuff that actually fits the "punk" part of the genre.

I like the Ramshackle Glory version more, but everything else in his solo discog is amazing. Probably Nothing is the fucking shit.

Has anyone listened to the Death has a thousand Ears record? It's a shame folk punk is dead because this album is stellar.

deathhas1000ears.bandcamp.com/

I can't believe people hated on probably nothing, had some of his best lyrics.

Nu-males with beards whining about capitalism and safe spaces over 3 chords on an acoustic guitar: the genre

It's all WAHHH HEROIN

>Nu-males with greasy hair whining about girls and cars over 3 chords on an electric: the genre

What is rock music?

>Hasn't listened to good folk punk
>Hasn't listened to good folk punk

There's an obscene amount of trash folk punk like you're describing but there's also amazing stuff

;_;

Have you listened to his final solo album, Cocoon Music? It's pretty weird hearing Pat sound truly happy.

Does anybody know how the fuck the first Ramshackle album happened? How did they release a hi-fi studio quality album with horns and quality overdubs and mixing, etc. etc.?

Also good. Pat is one of those artists who you listen to their music and you kind of feel like you become friends. Sometimes I worry about him, I was very sad when he retired but I hope he's happy.

I should probably pay more attention to people I actually know...

Pat got some mommy and daddy money after rehab

I don't even like folk punk but this is a cool thread. Good job, Sup Forums.

I'm not trying to come at you, but I'm pretty sure people feeling and acting this way is the reason he wants to disappear and stop making music

I think a lot of it has to do with him realizing the politics and values he endorsed through his earlier music are ridiculous

Yeah, I'm shocked. This is the first thread I've made since like 2011, and I expected it to just die immediately or be shitposted into oblivion.

I'm sure that is a part of it, but I remember him saying something about not really fitting in with the whole scene after getting a higher education or something.

To keep this thread going, anyone got any good folk punk recommendations?

I think you're projecting

He made a statement to that effect when he quit making music

Just this for me. I listened on a whim for folk punk nostalgia's sake

If you want to check out some newer good stuff, you should check out ONSIND's Dissatisfactions, and the latest Ghost Mice.

Oh, that makes me feel bad, he said in his retirement post it just wasn't him anymore and that he didn't fit with the scene. I hope people like me weren't the problem.

Check out Hanba my friends. Polish folk-punk, pretty cool stuff. Their self-titled release from this year is really good.

>breakdown
I should have said bridge

At least I got the "br" right

>tfw pat played in your town two years ago and you didnt find out until 30 minutes after the show was over
>he never came back
Makes me really sad. I've missed plenty of artists but knowing I'll never get to see pat do his thing is a bummer. I hope he's doing good though

>Tfw nobody comes to your town ever and the closest places bands play are hours away
>Tfw not American

As someone who's been in a touring band before: tell your country to get rid of its fucktarded temporary visa laws

Canada's? Because if so I'm afraid our prime minister is far too busy sucking liberal cock and selling arms to the Saudis to bother.

I'm trying to understand the cognitive dissonance required to listen to the music ITT and say shit like "sucking liberal cock"

You're allowed to listen to musicians with different political views to you

>Folk punk is pro government

Fuck off

you're in the taxpayers?!?
more releases pls

i have the
exact
same
feel
two years ago, alexandria VA, didn't find out until 30min after. drove to the venue, place was clearing out. still haven't gotten over it.

Too bad about Plan-It-X. I wonder what the Ghost Mice dude is gonna do to live, he's had a ton of shitty luck.

Such as?

>AJJ stopped being anything even close to folk punk
have they released anything since knife man?

Two mediocre indie albums with half written songs and poor production

Just listened to the new Ramshackle Glory

>tfw final track plays and you realize an era has ended

Goddamn, what a lucker

Pat will never admit to it publicly but he left the scene because it became a parody of what it was. The tranny tumblr tier feminists and "YOU'RE A FUCKING WHITE MALE" caricatures have become the fascists that the musicians despised and they've for the most part, hijacked the folk punk scene. One of our local folk punk bands who's been around for at least a decade got heckled out of a venue by a gang of those types because one of them had a "triggering" shirt on a few months back. Real shame what things have become.

Liberal=/=leftist

Pigeon Pit has an album I like a lot that came out last year and I think Sledding With Tigers is still making music

Sure wish we were working on something. Summer will be a good chance. Thanks for the support!

This is a big reason I haven't played music outside of The Taxpayers since moving to the Midwest. After 10+ years in the punk scene I was suddenly finding it very hard feel *at all* welcome in many spaces here. I also feel like we as individuals and as a band didn't fall in line with a lot of the politics of our fans, but a lot of them were younger and are maturing into fantastic folks.

mail fuck the internet records for good roots polk funk

Oh, here's something fun for Taxpayers fans if you've heard everything-ish.

This is a cut song from God Forgive These Bastards, it's the main character writing a letter to his mother that he's sick and dying, only to admit he really just needs the money.

I think we did that in one run, outside of the horns.

I ordered the Pat/Ceschi Split and it came with these letters if anyone is interested

sorry for the low quality but i just dont give a fuck

I took higher res photos in better light because you actually can barely read these

Folk punk is the faggiest white boy genre ever made

...

Wow thanks, You guys are great and I hope you do continue to make music. God forgive these bastards is probably one of my favorite albums of all time and all your guy's other work has been fantastic. Would love to see you if y'all do decide to tour ever. You're doing god's work son.

Hey I'm in a folk punk esque band.

Thanks for making this the most rewarding thread I've ever lurked on

Is Ceschi actually good? I heard that one album that always stays in the easily visible section of the folk punk tag on bandcamp, and didn't really like it. Is it all like that?

It's pretty good, clearly demos, but fairly consistent. And thanks for telling me about ConwayTheWhale, seems like something I would really enjoy too,

>whiny whiteboy shit
That's like, all of folk punk, man
