Unpopular opinion: better sax player than Coltrane.

What makes you say that?

Well, both were/are masters but Pharaoh (over)played with real unfamiliar flair. Some of his solos are utterly mind blowing.

I only say player though, Coltrane was clearly a superior composer and figure in jazz.

you know, fat mingus, coltrane, miles davis and the list could go on....

I dont know i dont listen to jazz

Charlie Parker.

Thanks for letting us know

>Doing more than straightforward jazz = bad, apparently

When will this meme end?

Archie Shepp is top tier

Max Roach, John Coltrane, Django Reinhardt

Jack DeJohnette

Donald Byrd or Horace Silver

interesting

I'm a fairly big fan of Pharaoh but I'd say Coltrane was definitely the more versatile and capable soloist, but Pharaoh's music during his Impulse! period especially has a great feel and style to it that's just very appealing to me

have them both solo in the same contest and I'm pretty sure Coltrane would be far superior - like if you listen to Pharaoh playing standards like on the Welcome to Love album, his playing is just not that interesting
