can anyone tell my what the fuck an 'angular riff' is supposed to mean?
not a fantano thing specifically, but I see it a lot in reviews of post-hardcore and late 90s/ mid 00s indeh. what the actual fuck makes a riff 'angular'? aren't all riffs played at an angle? i swear some stoned critic just made this term up one day and everyone started saying it

i think an angular riff would be something like the climbing thing in Red by King Crimson, or the core riff of Where Boys Fear to Tread by Smashing Pumpkins, riffs that kinda poke your eyes out

I usually think of angular riffs as jerky, syncopated, unconventionally rhythmic and occasionally dissonant guitar lines with liberal use of staccato notes.

I always think of mathrock or mathcore when that phrased is used, echoing the others, the riff is fairly dissonant and the tone emphasizes the higher frequencies. Example being the guitar riffs on this youtube.com
