This is Christian Death's best album.

Only Theatre of Pain is great, but it has way too much punk rock in it to be a true masterpiece. Its strongest quality, namely its abrasive and provocative attitude, is also what makes it feel quite predictable at times. OToP is a classic because it did what it did well, but it was a single note thing.

Valor, in contrast, took a lot more risks in his first release with CD. He didn't try to recreate Rozz Williams' dramaqueenishness but rather had more of a miserable poet thing going. The album as such had the just the right proportion of dark brooding atmosphere and punkish attitude, not to mention legitimately interesting lyrics and concept, centered on the Second World War. Even the Gloomy Sunday doesn't feel gratuitous (on a goth album!). Atrocities not only gave CD a more cohesive identity as a specimen of non-generic deathrock, but also helped the genre itself, in the way it brought together diverse elements and broke (or toyed) with cliches.

holy crap

any coldwave reccs?

Asylum Party is great.

Personally I think that Great Annihilator is more deserving of that spot than White Light.

What is /dark/'s 2016 AOTY

...

I made a coldwave chart some time a go wait a sec
Prince of Denmark - 8 desu, but it's techno
EPOTY was

Faith is the Cure's best album prove me wrong

It has some of their best songs but Pornography and Disintegration are more consistent.

While I like that (and White Light) more, I think Children of God fits the theme better.

Hey /dark/, just found this awesome EP recently.

If you have ANY interest in spikey, dancy post-punk, you owe it to yourself to listen to this. It sounds like a mix of ESG, Siouxsie Siouxsie and Joy Division with really tight musicianship and clear production. There are also noisier riffs that sound a LOT like Slint, strangely enough.

does anyone feel like evol is sort of post punk?

Why do people make fun of Slab?

It certainly is, Sonic Youth came out of the no wave scene and still carries many no wave elements even if it is more accessible.

"post-punk" is a very broad label

is evol accepted in these dark wave threads?

i just think the album is really good and consistent except without bubblegum

Is this album /dark/?

It's probably my favourite of theirs
yes but it's also shit

How do I into Throbbing Gristle? Every time I try I just get annoyed by them.

start with psychic tv 2bh

I have some memes.

do you have dank spurdo edits?

>tfw someone saved your shitty meme

TG isn't that good. It's a troll.

XIV is such an amazing track

I'm guessing dark ambient fits in here

Anybody got any recs?

Fantano loves /dark/ shit. A lot of the goth revivalists like Pop1280 and Grave Babies get good reviews from him

Illusion of Safety is great.

Best FLA album? I've always preferred pic related and Implode. The Chair is one of my favorites from them

Lustmord's last two records are great especially The Word as Power, though often as very "soundscape-y" dark ambient it can move you or bore you to tears
Also I like the atmosphere on the latest Cryo Chamber project, Nyarlathotep. It's too long for its own good, though.
Also checketh this out

Thanks

Nice, thank you

can't believe someone thought my girlfriend's girlfriend was comperable to JACKHAMMERRAPE

How can an album that defined deathrock be "generic-deathrock"? It's a shame their early albums (except Catastrophe) are always over-shadowed by OttoP they're underrated af, but that album is nonetheless a masterpiece.
I'm a bit biased since I love the more punk sounding side of deathrock tho

You're not alone. Maybe try TG Part 2: The Endless Not. It's much less annoying than their earlier works while remaining very experimental.

I dig TG but don't really like 20JG. At the time it may have sounded disturbing, but now it just sounds dated imo. Try 2nd Report, but expect an ambient album instead of an industrial one.

I wouldn't say it defined deathrock, it came out in 82 by the time the Dead Boys had a serious career, Gun Club and TSOL released their respective debuts and the scene was up and running.
OToP helped to define the style and the aesthetics in a significant way, though. Not necessarily in the music itself but more about the vibe.

Don't forget the Thirty-Second Annual Report too if you'd like to hear less-dated versions of Second Annual Report.

Honest opinion on EBM?

Can't really get into, I've tried Clock DVA (whose post-punk stuff is pretty good) and it just feels cheesy. I want to like it but I can't.

Don't get why people bash it so much. It's pure dance music in most cases, yeah it sounds very same-y and cheap most of the time, but serves its pupose well, I don't think it's supposed to be "good" music. When it's "good" though it can be great, like some of Front 242's stuff.

Front 242 counts as EBM?

i did not mean local to wherever you may be lol

someone needs to edit swans out. mall goth is not /dark/.

autoerotik is good in pieces, as a whole it's a mess. some great songs, but too repetitive and mediocre.

sadly, seems to be the theme to most modern post-punk/darkwave

it's really not meant to be enjoyable in any sense
is what it is

you are brain dead

did i hurt your mall goth feelings? do you need some nine inch nails to cry to?

if mall goths listened to swans I would've had a lot of mall goth friends in high school.

if anything a mall goth is most likely to listen to the cure on the chart

Have you guys heard of Devil Doll?
youtube.com/watch?v=PS87xpm8SoI

I dunno, I think Swans are more well known now. They certainly weren't mall goth material a decade ago but these days they very well could be, is probably just a high school kid speaking from experience.

mall goth is barely even a thing nowadays I think.

also, the average teenager these days doesn't have the attention span for a 10+ minute track

It probably has a different name and aesthetic now but I think it will pretty much always be a thing. "Outsider cred" is just too tantalizing for teens to pass up.

once upon a time on Sup Forums there was a thread about the SCARIEST music ever. A link impressed me but I didn't save it.

it is NOT this. but this is a good tonal comparison.

The yt image was like a really melty face in black and orange, maybe. cheers for any help. In both cases you can just feel the demons coming up through the floorboards.

is it this?
youtube.com/watch?v=br5tyuEUBWE

Thank you for you kind suggestion which matches every point I wrote!

But, it is not that. I still find nice new noise. :^D

HEY CHUMS.

Faggot here, and since this thread is talking about "dark" music, I thought I might share the regurgitated garbage I blended and christened as a new genre. I call it "Midi-Down".
It's so original and dark and cool right, you like it?

youtube.com/watch?v=4VwcHszQQ60

32 actually, but every edgy teen in malls around here wears a swan shirt. sorry to burst your bubble. swans. is. mallgoth.

original isn't dated you're just gay

I've never listened to a single Swans album, calm down.
