nah man, this is a great album. It's when varg is still doing his castration vocals (as opposed to his super filtered yet superior vocals on Filosofem), but the atmosphere is there. it really does what it was intended to do, which is stir the imagination. great shit

Yeah, the atmosphere is unreal on this album. As soon as it starts, with the guitar strums barely audible in this lo fi haze you know you are in for something special.

I never really delved into both. it was usually one or the other for me.
Dream evil is probably a bit of a meme in the power metal circle (its kind of a super group) but their debut album is really good.
If you dont know hammerfall yet check them out.
Also I'd look into anything by black majesty, but maybe start with Sands of time

I think any other bands I list will fall too far into either other subgenres or just normal heavy metal and likely won't have the sound you want. I personally think Hammerfall will hit closest to the sound you want, at least until Threshold where things start to go to shit.

Disfear are like the logical conclusion to punk imo and the HM-2 + d-beat combo is just unbeatable. The HM-2 and any riffs really is always fantastic. Kurt Ballou has gotten some good tones out of the pedal with Trap Them and Black Breath even though they are compressed to shit. Spinebreaker and Gatecreeper put out some thicc riffing with HM-2s last year
there can never be too much emphasis on guitar and bass tone and the hm-2 gives you some cool options
