PEMDAS is a good guideline and is easy to remember, but the way it's written can, if you're not careful, be taken to imply that multiplication has higher precedence than division (M is written before D) and that addition has higher precedence than subtracion (A is written before S). At university level, people usually know that this isn't the case, but I've seen many examples of, shall we say, "regular people" who do have this misconception.
tl;dr: PEMDAS (or equivalent) is good, but dumb people misuse it.

When I write PEMDAS in my high school classes and when I taught middle school, I always drew a right pointing arrow over MD and AS, as to say "whichever you approach first going left to right." Now I have all my students doing that on their own.
