FWB is fun because it showcases their sense of humor, something Sabbath aren't generally known for.

IMO Mob Rules is their most underrated album by far. It's beyond me how Falling of the edge of the world is not considered to be one of their best songs.

Black Sabbath [Warner Bros., 1970]

The worst of the counterculture on a plastic platter--bullshit necromancy, drug-impaired reaction times, lengthy solos. They claim to oppose war, but if I don't believe in loving my enemies, then I don't believe in loving my allies, and I've been worried that something like this was going to happen ever since I first saw a numerology column in an underground newspaper. C-

Paranoid [Warner Bros., 1970]

They do take heavy to undreamt-of extremes and I suppose I could learn to enjoy them as camp--the title cut is definitely screamworthy. After all, their audience can't possibly take that whole Lucifer bit seriously, can they? Anyway, I've always suspected that horror movies catharsized things I was too rational to care about in the first place. C-

Master of Reality [Warner Bros., 1971]

As an increasingly regretful spearhead of the great Grand Funk Railroad switch three years ago, in which the critics defined Grand Funk as a good old white boy blues band, although I knew of no critics, myself included, who played the records. Grand Funk are American--dull. Black Sabbath are English--dull and decadent. I don't care how many rebels and incipient groovers are buying, I don't even care if the band actually believes their own Christian/liberal/Satanist muck. This is a dimwitted, amoral exploitation. D+

We Sold Our Soul For Rock and Roll [Warner Bros., 1976]

By focusing on songs (of the 17 tracks on here, 10 hail from the first three albums) and omitting such pro-tempo-formula-virtuoso moves such as "Rat Salad", this collection makes for a fitting mock nostalgia document. Three tracks are taken from the band's fourth LP, cleverly titled "Black Sabbath Vol. 4", which I never got around to putting on back in 1972. And you know what? I'm still not sure I've heard anything on it. C+

Everything Rocks and Nothing Ever Dies [1990s]

Why is Christgau like this?

Practically all reviews of Sabbath from the early '70s were negative. A Rolling Stone Magazine review from 1970 spends several paragraphs ripping the band apart without once mentioning them by name. Lester Bangs called them a third-rate Cream imitation, although he later came to appreciate them. Christgau I think completely failed to understand them at all.

You have to remember that critics back then all masturbated to the Stooges and Velvet Underground.

So real

Before the rock press decided to target Black Sabbath, their favorite punching bag was Grand Funk Railroad. Their first six albums were universally panned by critics, eight of their first nine albums nonetheless went to #1 on the US Billboard 100 chart. The band also had four singles in the Top 10.

Nonetheless, GFR were completely savaged by critics as hype, un-musical noise, and phony. As Christgau's review of MOR shows, critics in the early 70s often also referenced Grand Funk while beating up on Sabbath. Sabbath bashing wasn't exclusive to the US, British reviewers of the time skewered them almost as thoroughly.

Rolling Stone Magazine's Album Guide finally upgraded Paranoid to 5 stars in the 2004 edition, 34 years after the album came out.

Richard Green wrote in the August 1971 New Music Express, “At last here it is, but don’t expect this one to win any awards. It is quite possible to play tracks at random and, with one or two exceptions, not be able to tell much difference… Sorry, lads, not this time.”

Mike Saunders wrote in the September 1971 The Rag, “Grand Funk has been the most important band in the land for the last year, which you’re probably aware of anyway. Grand Funk in concert are as big an attraction as the Beatles were in their heyday, and the truth is this: Grand Funk are the first SUPERGROUP, popularity-wise, America has ever had. Black Sabbath have been creeping up on Grand Funk, though… Well, what should one make of all this? Is it all just another sign of the decadence that seems to be everywhere these days?”

Lester Bangs wrote in the November 1971 Rolling Stone Magazine, “The real question is whether Black Sabbath can grow and evolve, as a band like the MC5 has, so that there is a bit more variation in their sound from album to album. And that’s a question this group hasn’t answered yet.”

Waiting for Black Metal Records to Come in the Mail

When Sabbath rolled out Vol. 4 in the fall of 1972, Lester Bangs experienced a full-fledged conversion and began to champion the band and their message. He compared "War Pigs" to Bob Dylan's "Masters of War", which took some balls. Anyway, Bangs's Rolling Stone essay on Vol. 4 is a classic of rock journalism.

For the rest of rock critics however, it was business as usual. Christgau couldn't be bothered to review Vol. 4, but critics such as Tom Clark and Max Bell continued to insult Sabbath as dull, uninteresting, and lacking any range in their sound or musical ideas.

When Black Sabbath came out with their fifth album, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, in 1973, critical opinion began to decisively shift in their favor. It didn't hurt that SBS displayed a considerable advancement in its maturity and depth.

Gordon Fletcher wrote in the February 1974 Rolling Stone Magazine, "This record transcends third-generation rock in that it possesses a degree of internal intricacy that belies popular conceptions of heavy-metal… An extraordinarily gripping affair… Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath is nothing less than a complete success."

Sabotage, released in mid-1975, was praised by Billy Altman of Rolling Stone Magazine as "Their best album since Paranoid, maybe their best ever. Even with the usual themes of death, destruction and mental illness running throughout this album, the unleashed frenzy and raw energy they’ve returned to here comes like a breath of fresh air.”

Oh, and her worst is Volta

I can't wait for this old cunt to die srsly

Paranoid is a great song

Thus, Sabbath not only survived all attempts by music journalism to destroy them, they only grew stronger.

Critics however, clearly didn't learn their lesson as reviews of Van Halen's debut album prove. From Creem Magazine, “LET ME TELL you about dinosaurs. No, ‘dinosaurs’ may be too harsh a term, even if Van Halen-style rockers do find their evolutionary fulfillment in a quick extinction…. Van Halen. Big rock. Remember the names. Extinct is forever.”

By the way, this was his upgraded review from "Consumer Guide to the '70s". The original review from 1970 went:

"Bullshit necromancy? Bullshit necromancy. E"

In the late 70s, critics all had their mouths on the ballsack of punk and New Wave. They thought the days of stadium rock had passed.
