Almost all American high schools allow the military recruiters to have booths on career day and such.
The Marines have one of the best marketing / public relations programs on Earth. They also have a great recruiting program that trains Marines with a few years of experience to be salesmen and "sell" the Corps to prospective applicants.
The toughness and danger is what drives the average 18 year old who joins up to join in the first place, not in spite of it.
