building new PC, shits all put together, it runs and beeps and shit. won't display to monitor. fuck around, test different power supply. works. put power supply into computer, shit doesn't work anymore. don't know what to do. help.

look up POST codes for your MOBO The beep is a POST code, it will tell you what the problem is, depending on the number/length of the beeps.
Source: Works desktop support and has built several computers.

Also, the answer is right in front of you. If you're saying that your machine doesn't work with power supply A, but works with power supply B, and power supply A doesn't work with a DIFFERENT machine, it follows that the power supply is bad. Git Gud faggot.

Did you plug it in?

its your graphics card im 100% sure it is

Did you turn it off and on again?

have you tried turning it off then back on?

What's the post code OP?

did you plug the monitor into the motherboard or the graphics card?

VGA port on motherboard.
i had one power supply in it, it didn't work, i took it out. i tested another one by plugging it in, but didn't put it into the tower in case it didn't work, didn't wanna have to take it out. it worked one time, so i put it into the tower, thinking it was the cure to the problem. didn't work a second time, took it out and tried again, shit didn't work.

the graphics card just came out of a different computer. it works.

Did you remember to put the motherboard stands on so you're not fucking shorting the goddamn power supply by having the motherboard directly touching the case?

call geek squad

Bwahahahahahaha
Ahahahahahaha
Hahahahahahaha

oh

we have a winner?

This happened to me like 15 years ago. I didn't put the rubber washers on with the mainboard screws. It was doing exactly as this user is saying. Took me half the day to figure it out. I remember being even more upset cause my dad bought me the thing and I was trying to show him I could handle fucking around inside the case.

plug it into the video card.... not the motherboard

probably.

I fucking hope not. It wouldn't even beep or run for very long in my opinion. Could be wrong though. I just can't imagine the short would've affected just that one thing.

I guess I just don't want to believe it - OP if you fucking cooked your mobo already then I'm upset and dissapointed.

I've 'fixed' a ton of first time builds with this step. Most people dont know what to do with those little screws with the holes on top.

Daaaaamn. Luckily modern builds just have the mainboard screws. No need for the washers any more. Imagining remembering to put on the screws but forgetting the added detail of lil rubber washers hurts my soul. Ah well. We all learn.

Sounds stupid but try plugging moniter into graphics card instead of motherboard

It's not going to short out the power supply.

It's just not going operate properly, (ie it'll beep at you and run all the fans but never post)

However, modern mainboards shouldn't need washers. They'll definitely need the spacer socket screws they supply.

OP did you put in too many spacer screws? You need to look at the layout of the mainboard then arrange the mounts appropriately to the hole pattern.

it would be stupid to do otherwise.

It's the death of otherwise working PSUs that identify this problem. The case should start up for a brief time, sometimes long enough to POST, then switch off

Oh I know its stupid to DO but it sounds stupid NOT to do

Cases don't start up.

op here, i fixed it. took motherboard out, put it on book, plugged it in and tried again, worked first try. im a genius.

Oh yeah man that's what I was saying in my other post - the modern ones don't need washer but they need the screws. I call them stand-offs. Sorry my wording is jank. Thank you for the info on what it'd do though. I don't have experience with that. I'm OCD and that's step one when opening my case and lining up the mobo holes and attaching peripherals. Wouldn't this fry his motherboard though? I'm not worried about his PSU. I figured it'd cook the damn thing to the point of no PC speaker.

Ah more good info. Thanks for the input. So it'll run peripherals since power's getting to them, but it shorts the mobo... and actually kills the PSU?!

You fucking idiot, you NEVER run a mainboard on paper or plastic. ALWAYS aluminum. Why do you think the ATX cases are aluminum? The ground at the mounting points. Fucking hell you're luck. Turn that thing off and put it directly against a sheet of metal immediately - the more conducive the better (copper is perfect) then turn it back on.

Shit son. Get those stand-offs screwed in, and as was also saying, make sure you also dont have too many. line up the holes and mark which ones you to hold the mobo up.

Fuck off.

K.

This isn't OP you nigger faggot.

Worst troll ever.

Then why are we three replies deep, faggot?

Probably wasn't op you responded to. Probably a guy who knows his shit and wouldn't try to fry his computer

Double check your jumpers plebian

It could fry the mobo, but likely wont. The PSU is designed to fail first if there are power irregularities. Provided the safties in the PSU are working, there is minimal danger to the rest of the hardware... But sometimes shit happens

Hahaha, that's how you measure if you're a good troll? "I've lost and suck at this, nobody ever lets me fuck with OP! :( Oh I know how I'll come back!"

Oh yeah absolutely. Glad he took the damn mobo out and he discovered it. If it was you that initially mentioned the stand-offs... Good fucking work. Adding that to my list when helping friends. Peace

well, if there were drivers for reading HDMI on the GPU, i would, but there isn't. shut up. i fixed it.

Like you've ever been a help to anybody

mobo is fine. fixed my shit.

if i didn't have a computer built on a peg board before this, i might be stupid enough to believe you.

op here, shit's running good now. about to install my OS. thanks for the help. this is my setup.

Enjoy your rig- don't be a dummy.

Oh fuck here comes bitching about cable management. Looks good otherwise.

Jumping ship before this turns into more ragers.

Like I said before, this happens enough that I recognize it pretty quickly. And really, internet forums and discussions are how a lot of the hardware level IT people learn the common problems and solutions. Books and courses usually miss all the cases of user error that we see a lot of

Cable management OCD aside, make sure you dont have any of that resting on the GPU. You dont want heat from that possibly melting plastic from your cords. Shouldn't get that hot, but I dont like to take chances.
