Hey tech support,
I got a big-boy job and want to build a pc. Please tell me if this is a smart build or tell me why I'm retarded. (I don't want to spend over $1700 on the build)

>Not buying alienware
Its decent
Thanks.
Is there anything you'd change/upgrade? My goal is to have a pc that can output 1440 to a 144hz monitor while doing light gaming (doesn't need to be ultra settings, etc) or watching videos, etc. Any money I can save on the pc build will go towards a nicer monitor.
Nope not really looks good and you will achieve those results
don't bother with the solid state drive, waste of money at that size.
You need controller for your alienware
Sweet, thanks.
Noted. I'll downgrade the ssd probably.
I'll get 2! Thank you!
I only have 3 games that use my solid state and Windows takes up only 20Gb.
I would bother with the ssd. Faster boot and load times. You might also want more than 650 watts. You will need it if you add a second graphics card or more ssds later
If he just loads his os on the ssd it will help with boot time, he can store his other shit on a hdd
>core i7
>fast mem
>ssd
>wd blue
>sleeve bearing fan
wtf nigger
Agreed op should take the ssd 250gb minimum. Games these days are upto 60gb each and ssd really cuts down loading times on them
I have a similar build ( mines not as good ) I play on a 1680x1050 monitor. Every game i have played has been beautiful. Your video card will more than likely be able to play at 1440p. Hope this helps!
I'll up the wattage to a 750.
I'm white.
I'll keep the 250gb ssd in the build. I've got room in the budget still.
Thanks man. Appreciate the input!
HOLD UP WTF IS UP WITH THOSE HANDS
When I bought my SSD before I used this a lot. The 250Gb Samsung was expensive at the time and I bought a measly 128gb Kingston for $50. SSDs get faster and faster the higher memory they have. I'd recommend redoing all your parts according to this.
www.userbenchmark.com/
Alright, I won't go lower than 250 ssd (might increase). I'll check out that site. Thanks.
W-what do you mean?

the i7-6700k is overkill for gaming. get an i5-6660k and a gtx 1080 instead.
>>You are seeing things
Stevie Wonder isn't.
Did some Frankenstein experiment go horribly wrong on your thumb(s) ?
My sides
Use the new M.2 SSD socket on the motherboard and get 32 Gb/s data transfer rate.
My thumps are fine.
Food. Wtf is hand wrong with

Isn't the 1080 a lot more than I need/will use to accomplish 1440 @ 144 gz?
I'll swap out the SSD in the build for the m.2. Thanks!
OH GOD WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR THUMBS
...
I'm with this guy. I build computers and most people don't notice a difference between a i7 and a i5. You may want to come down a little on the processor and spend most of your money on the video card and power supply. Video card and RAM are far more noticeable than processor speed.
Yea nah mate we're gonna need some more pictures for science and research
no, the 1080 is perfect for 1440p 144hz. that's what i use.
valid choices my friend.
no, get 2 ssd drives, raid 0, for os and main programs. super fast load speed.
Were going to need a picture of that left hand
i7 isn't that important unless you're running programs, if you want gaming the GPU is all encompassing. Just find the best GPU deal that this smart man pointed out and go with i5 or more as well as your SSD.
What's going on with skinny rectum thumb

Okay, thanks. Could you recommend a specific model/link to a 1080 card? There are so many fucking options and I don't want to pick something retarded.
Price between i5 and i7 is negligible. I have enough in the budget to be a little over-kill on it.
His face sure doesn't look like he's eating a fudge bar.....
...
Faggot
lol why's that
My university gave me a computer with a 128GB ssd, they also required me to install multiple programs that can only be installed in C like visual studio, have a linux virtual machine etc. It's literally the worst
Why are you spending so much on your motherboard? You can go with a cheaper motherboard and put more money into your hard drives.
EVGA is shit, just like that WD Blue.
Buy a bigger power supply. Your power supply is basically the only component that can wreck everything else if it fails. Buy a decent 850w.
Also, sleeve bearing.... Have fun buying a new fan soon.
>My university gave me a computer
No, I'm pretty sure you paid for it with your tuition monies.
I havent read the whole thread but personally I would take the i7 down to an i5 and take the WD Blue to a WD black. Other than that seems legit. Good job OP
No, it was covered by a scholarship
. You could play around and copy files from one place to another just to watch the extreme speed, but ultimately, there's no practical point in 2 drives.
The best value is one fast 500MB/s SSD and a large backup USB 3.0 hard drive (or internal, your choice).
There's a lot of criticism regarding SSD's in RAID-0 but most of it comes from people who are either jealous or stupid. SSD's scale extremely well in RAID and after 3 years of running eight of them in a RAID-0, i saw no noticeable change in performance.
Point:
Choose RAID-0 for your SSD's if you want to take a screen shot of the benchmarks and feel good about having super fast transfer speeds. Understand that your games and other applications won't see any benefit due to other bottlenecks.
Choose a single FAST (500MB/s) SSD and a large platter drive for your storage if you don't care about benchmarks and only care about the performance of your games and applications. You'll get the same performance from them and save money
>Why are you spending so much on your motherboard? You can go with a cheaper motherboard and put more money into your hard drives.
$150 on a mobo isn't bad. I have extra money in the budget I could use on upgrading hdd's etc.
>EVGA is shit, just like that WD Blue.
Why is EVGA shit and what do you believe isn't shit?
>Buy a bigger power supply.
Sure. No objections here. 850w it is.
>i7 down to an i5
Is that because of a money vs performance reason? If so I'm okay spending a little more for the added performance, but if the reason is because it will make the system work harder and components needing to be replaced sooner, I'll entertain the idea of going to i5.
>WD Blue to a WD black.
No objections. black it is.
got faster load speeds with my raid 0 which was all i was looking for.
I have always tried to spend less than $100 on mobos, because the performance difference is non-existent.
Are you married to an NVIDIA card. I've found that they are far more frail than ATI cards. I've had plenty of NVIDIA cards fail, but I've never had an ATI card fail.
Admittedly, the downside of ATI cards is that certain configurations can be relatively buggy, but their driver support is much improved since the AMD buyout.
i use 3 drives:
1 small SSD for my OS
1 large SSD for everything i use regularly
1 huge HDD for storage (read: porn)
I dont like my OS data mingling with my other programs an vice versa and the HDD i treat like a storage unit; its where i dump the shit i dont really care about but i dont really want to get rid of.
>Are you married to an NVIDIA card
Not in the slightest. I found this build online with many positive ratings and brought it to my personal tech support Sup Forums army to ask what they thought and tweak it to perfection.
>the downside of ATI cards is that certain configurations can be relatively buggy
I'm open to going the ATI route, but where do you suggest I look for builds/configurations to result in little to no bugs?
Downgrade thei7 to the i5 previously mentioned.upgrade to a full atx as a mid is going to be cramped. stay with the 1070 GPU unless you are planning to do VR.
You sure you know how to build it?
Yes, it is simple but it'd be a shame for you to do some silly mistake and fuck up your shit
Just go with a single card instead of a 2 card configuration and you'll be fine.
I didn't even pay attention to the fact you picked out the 1070. That's a beast of a card, assuming they don't revolutionize the graphics card market anytime soon (it happens from time to time).
Stick with the 1070, but buy a Gigabyte for a little bit less (they're exceptionally reliable) or spend a little bit more for a liquid cooled MSI.
How small is the ssd for your os
>You sure you know how to build it?
It's been like 8 years since I built a pc, but I think I'm good. Only part I'm not sure about is the thermal paste. What method do you suggest; Pea-sized thermal in center of cpu (I did this when cleaning my laptop. Fuck HP laptops. You need to take the whole fucking thing apart to clean the fucking fan.) and place sink on top or the line method?
>or spend a little bit more for a liquid cooled MSI.
I'm just staying away from liquid cool, because I've heard there's added maintenance and I've never done liquid-cooled before.

Go with the Gigabyte then. It would be my choice anyway. I love their stuff, and I've had very good luck with all their hardware.
>Gigabyte then.
I'm retarded and there are 50 results on newegg for "gigabyte 1070". Mind choosing one for me? newegg.com
pick one that works with my mobo/system and include your LoL ign, throw-away email, or w/e you want and I'll gift some shit your way.
pea size sink on top
If I were you I would skip the ssd and get a 7200 rpm hdd for more space cus if you get alot of games 1 tb is gonna run out quick
if your budget is 1700 throw fucking 1700 on it. Get a bigger SSD, Get a 1080 instead of a 1070. Get a bigger HDD like you think 1TB is going to last you awhile but it does not. Oh, and its 2016 get fucking 32gb of RAM
Thanks.
Does the brand/type of thermal paste Really make a difference or is it like monster selling $50 HDMI's that are the same fucking thing as $1 monoprice ones? And how often do you realistically change your paste?
I definitely want at least an ssd to boot the OS + some games.
>Get a 1080 instead.
Please link me to a 1080 which you recommend and which would work with the system. there are a shit ton of brands/options. And I'm a noob when it comes to this shit.
>Get a bigger HDD
I've currently got a 1TB in my primary computer and I'm near maxed out, but I've got a 4tb external that I'm offloading to. I'll be starting this PC with only the OS and my steam library and accessing all other shit through the external as needed.
>and its 2016 get fucking 32gb of RAM
I'm fine dropping the money on this, but is it necessary? my friend was saying 16 would be over-kill. I'm getting 2x8gb in a 4-bay mobo so I could upgrade later anyway.
Just go with the EVGA 8gb 1080 like this evga.com
there are some cheaper versions tho
If your steam library is to pig that 1tb can still be filled pretty fast.
I guess you could upgrade later but if you have the money why not spend it now? It only benefits you. TBH I have 16 in my current machine and I struggle with making it work. But I also never close ANYTHING.
Big* fuck me
