One is spookier than the other

Post-Punk hates itself Gothic Rock hates everything excluding itself

This is the problem with people lumping genres into neat little boxes. Once punk started to fade out and certain artists began recognizing that punk music had become a church, they refocused that energy into something else. Robert Smith, Siouxsie Sioux (who was formerly a Sex Pistols tagalong), John Lydon, Peter Murphy. They took what punk was and transformed it into something else. That became the goth scene. Nearly all gothic rock from that time period would also be considered post-punk. That's what it was.

It's like when people try to claim My Bloody Valentine was not a neopsych band, which they very clearly were.

But NO! They HAVE to be SHOEGAZE and ONLY SHOEGAZE because I READ that ONLINE!

Joy Division was a goth band by the way.

Are U2 post-punk?

nailed it

assume it's kind of like the difference between early black metal and thrash from the same time, kind of a matter of lyrics content and presentation more than anything

Joy Division is not the only post-punk band, post-punk means a lot of things.
But to answer your question on how to distinguish goth and post-punk: Goth has cleaner production where post-punk sounds more raw.

It's darker and gloomier

Joy Division is proto goth

Closer is gothic, UP is post-punk.
The idea that post-punk is just spooky punk is bullshit by the way, listen to gang of four that's post-punk too

420 BAUHAUS

How is Joy Divison "proto goth"? Siouxsie and the Banshees had already put out two albums by the time Unknown Pleasures came out. Three Imaginary Boys came out the same year as UP. Bela Lugosi's Dead, the definitive goth single, came out the same year as UP.

>Closer is gothic, UP is post-punk.
I am going to tear my hair out.

Their early records are usually considered post-punk, yes. Stylistically they weren't all that different from a lot of the most obvious bands associated with post-punk.

They were certainly more post-punk than The fucking Church, but people have zero problem calling The Church a post-punk band.

The difference is The Church never had the massive success U2 did when they tried to change what they were doing.

>Closer is more gothic than Unknown Pleasures

Sounds better?

Unknown Pleasures is no where near gothic.

I found Closer to be closer(lol) to experimental than UP, Substance and Still were both a hearty mix of P-P and Gothic.

Anyone who tries to convince me that New Dawn Fades isn't a gothic song is full of shit.

The Cure's considered gothic right? I was expecting something like Closer but with the atmosphere turned up a notch but all i got was a light rock album with tons of synth and the typical 80's sound, siouxsie was the exact same thing. So disappointing.

tpf Shoegaze is essentially psychedelic, so saying that it's neopsych is redundant

To add to this, (younger) people seem to believe the the term "post-punk" gives some sort of credibility to a band if they are slapped with that tag. Despite that fact that for every post-punk band you know, there were 5 others who aren't even worth remembering.

>Unknown Pleasures is no where near gothic.
Categorically and blatantly false. The only difference is Joy Divison weren't wearing big hair and makeup. Their music still dealt the same bleak and depressed themes that literally every other goth band was playing at the time. Even more so.

Experimental is not a genre, unless you're trying to troll me. This post reads like satire of your average 1995 born music blogger.

Shadowplay, Disorder, Interzone, Candidate, Wilderness tho? Those are not gothic

Honestly the only song on the album which sounds remotely gothic is day of the lords which is coincidentally the best song on the album.

Yes, shoegaze is (usually) inherently psychedelic. But no, to say it is neopsych is not redundant. Shoegaze is a very, very specific kind of psych.

I have had posters on this board try to tell me Loveless is not psychedelic (IT'S SHOEGAZE BRO!!!!).

Similar to what is happening in this thread.

How condescending.

Bauhaus is the most authentic sounding Gothic Rock Band
Early Sisters of Mercy too

>Post Punk, A genre so autistic we still don't know what the genre actually is.
I love this board so much.

>flowers of romance
>more experimental than the pere ubu and deceit
The fuck? Unless I listened to a completely different album, flowers of romance is just a fairly standard rock album, at least compared to their previous albums.

I'm not really trying to be condescending, but this idea that a certain band needs to be pigeonholed into a certain scene/genre is absurd. The internet era has damaged the way people see music. Is Unknown Pleasures gothic? Yes. Is it post-punk? Yes. What about Closer? Yes. It is gothic. It is also post-punk.

Like I said, listen with your ears. Compare Unknown Pleasures to Three Imaginary Boys. Pretty sure we can all agree that The Cure was one of the defining bands of the goth era. And yet Unknown Pleasures is more gothic in sound and style than TIB.

I see your point now. Yeah, You're right.

Post Punk is mayonnaise, Goth Rock is sour cream

>Standard rock album

>Mfw No Lost Lost
>Mfw They Walked In Line
>Mfw Isolation
>Mfw The Entirety of Les Bains Douches

They only care about Decades and saying "Closer is better".

SO LONG STAYING HERE WAITING FOR THE WARNING

WE'VE BEEN MOVING ROUND IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS

No Love Lost is so fucking good early Joy Division material is so overlooked

more proof that gothic rock> post-punk

What album did you listen to?

pornography and disintegration. Those are considered their best right?
