Metalcore, or metallic hardcore, is a hardcore punk/extreme metal fusion genre. The sound was pioneered by the bands Rorschach, Starkweather, Integrity, Converge and Earth Crisis. The crossover thrash style and the NYHC/heavy hardcore styles had a large impact on this sound, being the blueprint for the 90's style. Starkweather's first album, "Crossbearer", is known to be the first real example of metalcore. Creating a dissonant, heavy and abrasive version of this punk/metal fusion, the style branched out into other subcategories according the the region and style. Some bands leaning towards black metal, death metal, thrash metal, math rock and post-hardcore influences. This genre would have similarities with grindcore, crust punk, sludge metal, crossover thrash and other fusions. Once the band Overcast started implementing more melodic death metal into their sound, the genre shifted. Bands like Unearth, KsE and AILD started to favor melodic death metal. This style is called melodic metalcore. Melodic metalcore is supposed to be a metalcore/melodeath fusion genre. It did sound closer to this definition during its introduction. It possess next to no hardcore punk Influence, favoring watered down "melodic death metal"(SoTS riffs) and "metalcore" breakdowns. This style Incorporated a poppy song structure and choruses. I have no issue if people enjoy this style, members of the initial bands of this style did participate in some actual metalcore bands. From this style, bands like Attack Attack! and Asking Alexandria took this melodic metalcore based style and added even more poppy hooks. Now "Mallcore" is an umbrella term that encompasses the modern "core" genres. These styles have practically nothing in common with the original metalcore wave and are NOT punk/metal fusion bands. These styles possess electronic elements, super clean production and high pitched singing. This style has virtually no hardcore, metalcore or extreme metal elements.
