I like it better without the blending/gradient around the eyes and mouth. Let the linework speak for itself.

The blue background and solid colors on #1 are very attractive, at least for this illustration

The depth you get from stippling on #2 is nice as well. Feels just a bit like old D&D art, but not in a derivative way
