If running had minor variations within the sport, bolt would have 100 golds by now. Michael Phelps isn't even the best swimmer in the world. He's basically just a stat padder. Imagine if there were arbitrary distincions like 100m 120m 140m 175.23m. Bolt would have all golds.

Yeah I get your point, Phelps has "more" medals but they're pretty fucking meaningless. For example MJ would have 10 medals per olympics if they had a 3pt contest, team game, dunk contest, one on one matchups, two on 2 matchups, 3 on 3, 4 on 4 and so on.
Phelps is a great athlete but he benefits greatly for having so many oppurtunites to compete for so many medals that other athleres dont.

There are 15 or so running events excluding jumps, which arguably use similar skills. Compare that to 17 men's swimming events. Basically the same.
Phelps also has to master different swimming techniques, whereas Bolt just sprints.

Why don't track athletes compete in loads of events like the swimmers do?
I'm pretty sure Bolt could win the 110m hurdles (especially cause he's so tall), 400m, 400m hurdles, long jump (a la Jesse Owens), triple jump, maybe even 800m (that might be a stretch though).
If the swimmers can do it, why not the runners?
