Any carfags here that can give me some insight? Heres the story:
>be me omw to work in the morning
>car all of a sudden begins to slow down
>pull over to the side, car completly turns off
>try turning back on, would violently jerk and stay off
>get it towed home
>car turns on after an hour
>lots of shaking
>car struggles to accelerate
>car seems like it wont shift gears so i ease on the accelerator before it blows up now.
>shakes very violently when reversing
Im thinking this is the transmission. What do you guys think? You think id have to replace the whole thing?

Btw, yes the oil was recently changed, no leaks, no smoke.

Manual or auto?

This is an auto. 2004 honda civic

idk much about cars but I feel as long as your not an idiot, an auto transmission should last the life of the engine

I can't say for sure but you're definitely describing what I experienced when my tranny bit the dust
Mine was manual though so no idea how it would feel in an automatic

Some cars just have shit transmission m8
I'm this guy I bought a new jetta cause I'm obviously a faggot
I had driven a manual eclipse for 5 years before that, my jetta's transmission died in the first two years

and by life you mean 100-140k on a lot of vehicles that will easily last well over 300k

Odd thing is, it was working perfectly on my way back home just now. But the violent jerking is definitly not right..

Yep, transmission issue, maybe they put the wrong atf or u did the fluid change too late

Would a bad tranny cause a car to turn off and struggle to turn back on tho? At first we thought it was just a bad battery since the ignition seemed like it lacked power to turn over along with the clicking noise. We changed the battery, car turns on now but now we have the transmission problem..

throwing any codes? does it shake in park or nuetral? did you physically check the trans? check fluid levels?is it over heating? does your radiator fluid look like a strawberry smoothie?

Yeah sorry bud tranny is dead. My brothers 1998 Accord had the same problem and sent the car in to rebuild the tranny and after 2 months the tranny is starting to show early signs of it failing again. Best thing to do is get it fixed and sell it Honda Trannys are built like shit. Guess you got a unlucky year.

We will assume you are a good car owner, and keep up on your fluids, didn't do a neutral drop, didn't hit anything, ect.

Then I would safely say your tranny is slipping. Not an at home/noob project.

Theres a check engine light now yes, but auto shops are all closed atm to check out the code...will do in the morning. It shakes in neutral occasionally, no overheating, all fluids are at correct levels, and no strawberry smoothie

sounds like you cracked a cylinder
is there evidence of a recent massive loss of oil?

good news though
it is usually cheaper to get another car than replace the engine

did you do a compression test? spark test? fuel pump test? is the air getting in fine? is the throttle body caked? are the injectors delivering enough? is your exhaust clogged or sucking air back in? what about a cylinder leak down test?

Nope we checked that, there are no oil leaks. I recently had the oil changed as well.

depends on who does the work but yeah it is unfair.
autozone will pull the codes for you or you could use the built in diagnostic on the dash to check.

I actually had this problem, too. It happened on my way to work as well coincidentally. It was on my 2008 Chevy suburban. I got 3 error codes. "Reduced engine power, service traction control, service Stabilitrak." The weird thing is that it only happened when it was really cold, like below 0°F cold.

Honestly ive done none of that, im not a mechanic, only know the basic maintenance which ive kept up with. This all happened today so i havent had time to get it into a shop.

try resetting the codes?

is there oil in the engine?
if so, is the oil yellowish or black in color, or is it milky white?

Complete opposite here, im in Miami so it was really hot and rainy. I havent checked my codes yet tho, will do that first thing in the morning.

Depends where one gets the engine.

Hey op I know this sounds lame but did someone spike your gas tank with sugar? Or something else?

The oil was recently changed, it is the clear golden color of brand new oil. No chocolate milk or burnt oil.

Shit i fuckin hope not

God is trying to tell u to get a new car

Could be blow head gasket. Honestly 04 civics have terible transmissions. Could be shift solenoid or many other things. Could be your engine with a bad vacuum leak. I grew up fixing my own cars. Grow some ball and look it up then fix it. Fucking be a man annon

Lol same here dude
Mine died on the way home from a road trip
I pulled into my neighborhood and it started rattling and just died.

everything i suggested is pretty easy and minimal on tool requirement. checking the air filter is not hard or lookinf at the throttle body nor holdinf a piece of paper by the exhaust to see if it's getting sucked in. checking the spark plugs and injectors requires a tiny bit of common sense to d/c the injector for what ever spark plug you're testing ao that you don't flood the engine or if using the spark plug on the engine to avoid spraying fuel everywhere.

Not a newer honda at least. I see the 80's and 90s ones running like champs?

At first I was thinking it was the fuel pump because of the engine dying And not wanting to start back up. It first started happening when it got down to -15°F. I was in northeast Iowa during winter at the time. I then took it down to Tucson, and have had no issues. I'm in Kansas now and I'm hoping it won't be too cold this winter

aw.. atleast it liked you enough to bring you home

*rebuilt and maintained
Seen too many of those junkers stalled out and worked on a few of them, they're poo lawn mower engines.

and you checked that since the engine shit canned?
and wiped the dipstick and checked again?

>spike your gas tank with sugar
is also a very likely possibility

also, you're wasting our time
you admitted that you know fuck all about cars
so it is unlikely we could give a definitive diagnosis instead of a list of likely problems
wait till the morning and get it towed to a mechanic
problems with the block and transmission are not something that you should jump into for your first diy car repair

Well i know that a blown head gasket would be indicated by having basically chocolate milk in your engine instead of oil as a result of water and oil mixing together. My engine doesnt have that.

OP blew a tranny

Yes to the dipstick wiping. And hey i may be wasting your time with my shit knowledge about cars, but i atleast brought up an interesting topic for you car people. Its all good. Thanks for the insight people. If you guys are around in the morning, ill post a new thread giving an update.

I've done electrical and solar panel installation, rough carpentry, finish carpentry, car repairs, plumbing, and now currently working on 18wheelers. People not knowing what to do has nothing to do with growing a pair. why fuck around when you can have the job done correctly by a pro?

...

The way planetary gearboxes work. It sounds like you have a fucked up transmission.
>Expensive
>Probably sent shit flying around the transmission e.g. metal, chunks of the clutch band
Not sure what you did to do that... Unless something hit it.

Could just be a misfire if it's shaking in neutral or park. Check leads at night time to see any arching. Signs that the tranny is going will be a delay in engaging drive or reverse, or not moving in these gears.

Thats exactly what its doing tho. It hesitates whenever i go into reverse or drive. When i accelerate it would violently jerk snd finally go after a second or two. It also seems as if it just wont go into second gear, meaning i have to ease off the accelerator now before it blows up..

sausce?

Sugar wouldn't get through the the filter dipshit

sounds like you got worn out muffler bearings and maybe some issues with axle pistons

Honda technician here. Get the code from transmission this van be done with obd port just below the steering column...my guess is the torque converter... If the transmission hasn't been properly serviced ever 90K then to much metal build up has caused the torque converter to fail... A fix temp if its not to far gone is flush the transmissions.. step one drain transmission start the car in neutral allowing the car to drain torque converter... Using a flush machine which flushes it with K1.. then adding Honda synthetic transmission fluid....

What kinda machine do I need to get the code?
What do I plug into port?

Also there is a filter in the transmissions for those who claim it can be swapped... All Honda Automatic Transmissions the filter is simply a screen in the middle of the transmission that splitting the case is the only way to replace...

A simple scaner or just go to your local part store.. most do it for free.

It's probably the mayonnaise.

literally the most fucking autistic response i've ever heard

>What kinda machine do I need to get the code?
OBD2 diagnostic reader
costs ~$80
but you can rent one from most auto parts stores
port is some where under the steering wheel

Thanks Anons.

Sounds like you forgot to change your wiper blades regularly.

Could be low on blinker fluid

not smart enough to reply to a post
not smart enough to give advice

Timing chain is stretched or about to fuck up your tensioner

Was there porn involved? I always start jerking violently when I see some nice titties.

Mass airflow sensor, or fuel system issues.

Correction
hondas are built like shit unless you get a pre-1994 honda.
Afterwards, they became as shitty as any other.

I bought a golf and then had to have the tranny wiring loom replaced, expensive as fuck. Don't buy VW autos. manual master race!

I had a dead tranny in my Accord. It only took 10 minutes of work with a shovel to take care of that.

Anytime when it comes to Hondas always nice to help a fellow Honda Driver..

you buried the car?

No, just the dead tranny.

And of you owned a J30A (3.0) could have taken only $100 and a shift solenoid.. very common problem.

sounds like a holiday in Thailand

The joke, I could hear the sonic boom of it flying the fuck over your head all the way from over here.

All the people replying are complete morons. You have a bad coil pack or cop. A code reader will tell you which cylinder has a bad cop and then you can simply change the coil pack. The coil pack is what your spark plugs plug into. Probably $40 bucks at the most. Easy fix.

And you sir, are made of mayonnaise.

You are wrong, moron, Miracle Whip is the correct answer.
