Sup Forums recommend me metal that is technical, very ragey, and not cringey. Pic related, because it's close to what I'm talking about, but I find Death Metal growls to generally be a bit cringe-inducing. Old school Opeth fans say that their music used to sound "evil" and I just think it sounds slightly cringe inducing. Black Metal is like 10x worse though.

lol if you think typical death and black metal is le cringe but not the tacky goth imagery, "sensitive" ballads and terrible lyrics of that era of Opeth, you have your priorities seriously mixed up

>XD cringey-cringe! eww cringies are yucky!

My mistake. I'll try to use a different word next time. My brain is fucking fried right now, and my words and sentences are all redundant. It's been a long day. There's a quality about Death Metal growls that I don't like. There's also a quality that I do like, mostly the fact that when I'm fucking pissed, it's really cathartic to listen to them. Wondering if there's a middle ground. I think there just might not be.

so basically you want wanky melodeath with clear vocals

let's see

how about in flames?

does any of this feature Björn "Speed" Strid?

You like Alcest and Les Discrets?

I dunno alcest is kind of up that alley.

Most of Sup Forums will be upset if you don't prefer a polarized version of the format.

>alcest
>very ragey

You've listened to Children of Bodom right?

What did you think of it?

I'm really sorry but English isn't my first language. I think there's some nuance in your post that I'm missing.

Well the nuance is simply that Alcest is soft as fuck by BM standards, and pretty much the opposite of "very ragey" as far as black metal goes.

You can give some of the stuff by Enslaved a try.

Also, despite being black metal, Emperor is great.

You can try Katatonia. They're like a butt rock version of Opeth.

meshuggah

I'm pretty plebian, man. I don't know half of the fucking bands that you guys are talking about. I looked them up and clicked the first video I saw. I don't really think they're for me. The synth was kind of weird. I'm not against synth. Just not in that style. Wasn't a huge fan in general.

Oh so it's not pure enough for you. See, that was my commentary on Sup Forums's reaction to suggesting a band like alcest.

Anyway I don't think ragey music is very objectively compared, it seems to hinge on people's tastes. It's a pretty garbage adjective all things considered in this discussion.

It features Bjorn "Bjorn" Bjorn

then maybe try Made of Hate's first album, it's basically CoB without the keyboard

Yeah especially considering that metal isn't really about expressing anger, it's more about portraying a stylized representation of anger.
Hardcore punk might be more your speed, but it's not technical at all.

>hardcore punk might be more your speed
strid

Opeth's the most cringe-inducing metal band out there though. They don't have the balls to be progressive enough like Dream Theater or Maudlin Of The Well but at the same time they don't have the balls to be viscerally intense like metal tends to be.

Go listen to some sludge metal or misanthropic black metal if you want metal that's "ragey" as most metal otherwise by nature of the music is far too empowering and uplifting to be angry regardless of the lyrics being about some occult B movie shit or not. Otherwise just listen to earlier Dream Theater or Maudlin Of The Well or Cynic if you can't digest the harsh vocals nor the meaty riffs that make metal it's own thing.

Only reasonable comment.

>Enslaved
>Emperor
>Despite being black metal

You're fucking stupid.

Katatonia >>>>>>>> Opeth

OP have you tried the black dalia murder

>cuckatonia
>ensodomized
>lameperor

>They don't have the balls to be progressive enough

It doesn't take balls to be progressive at all.

oh come on there's way worse than opeth, it's just that Opeth are painfully mediocre and gutless.

But at least they aren't making christian nu-atmodjent or someshit

One of the requirements of prog metal is lusting after small children so I think a modicum of balls are required.

God looks like /metal/ shitposters are here

I think by being unpolarized they contribute their own special blend to it. I like harsh shit but not all the time. I unironically listen to Boris. And I think Opeth isn't cringe-inducing for not going "full retard" into wankery or shriekery.

Rip Obscura

...

So recommend me better Heavy Prog Metal. Prog is like the genre that most of my taste has spanned from, but I'm still new to the Metal scene. Opeth is one of the most entry level Progressive Death Metal Bands out there. I do like Dream Theater - or at least Metropolis Part 2. Some of the other albums don't do it for me though. I more consistently like Opeth than DT, and actually like newer Opeth better than their older stuff, but their new stuff isn't as cathartic to listen to.

You say I should check out Maudlin Of The Well, too?

>I unironically listen to Boris.

Are there people that listen to Boris ironically? Those people should fucking kill themselves.

>And I think Opeth isn't cringe-inducing for not going "full retard" into wankery or shriekery.

Might not be fucking Djent but it's still shit.

Bands belonging to any branch of metal with the word progressive in it are usually terrible. Check out Maudlin and leave it at that, at least with prog metal.

This is like a better version of Blopeth

Listen to good metalcore. Converge, TDEP, Botch, Number 12 Looks Like You.

Extremely technical, extremely powerful, but no fantasy and melodrama.

Wait is it cool to hate on Enslaved or something?

They've always been a fucking great band despite the occasional misstep with progshit.

They're the first band that really got me into black metal and I have a huge respect for them because of that

But it's not even about being harsh or not. Most doomy stuff like say...Black Sabbath's Master Of Reality for example, is nowhere near as harsh as the loudest moments from Opeth, but they maintain what makes them a metal band: interesting riffs. Opeth's hurt far more by uninteresting rhythms and lack of incorporating actual non-metal forms than they are just on the idea of genre hopping.

And Boris is pretty great idk what they gotta do with this. They are kind of a good example in that outside the stoner as fuck stuff like Heavy Rocks, they don't really bring the riffs often, but they work very well as a drone band with their textures and microtonal playing.

>at least Metro pt. 2
Yeah. Like, I used to be on the same hate bandwagon on Dream Theater that many metal fans often get on, but honestly when they aren't trying to be metal and are doing mostly progressive stuff like Metro Pt. 2 they are excellent.

>I more consistently like Opeth than DT
DT for sure has more shitty albums thanks to their awful later career, but their best stuff is far better than anything Opeth's done, particularly thanks to their rhythm section and just better focus on what they were trying to achieve.

>You say I should check out Maudlin Of The Well, too?
Yup, like Opeth there's some kind of extreme metal + nonmetal thing going on, but their non-metal sections tend to go much further in incorporating the forms themselves so there's actual juxtaposition between like jazz or chamber music or w/e and metal. Like Opeth's Still Life/Blackwater Park and Dream Theater's Metropolis Part 2, it's all obviously contextualized in the concept of each record.

Recommend starting off with the two records Bath and Leaving Your Body Map.

This is literally the answer.

Listen to Jane doe and calculating infinity. If you don't get it the first time, you will trust me. TDEP is like metal beef heart.

>Semenslaved

I hate how you backtracked on your wording in your OP just because a couple Anons joked on you. "Cringy" is an accurate enough description of how you feel about death metal growls and you know it. Everyone here knows damn well what you mean by it. Be confident in what you say.

bring me the horizon is lit, although it may not be your thing

What does he mean by this

youtube.com/watch?v=NRO1LX5Kk3o
youtube.com/watch?v=_p_Is-x7-Hk

This whole album is the most rage-filled album I've ever heard, and is fairly technical

Like another user said, metalcore and mathcore are your best bets

>Listen to good metalcore

This joke was very close to making me laugh

>asking the faggots on here to "be confident"
Whoa user what were you thinking

Just get fucking ANGRY and listen to warshit at the gym and get massive GAINS

youtube.com/watch?v=BvEi9SfsmaA

Kindly reminder that Opeth was NEVER death metal.

You could probably check out Gorjia, the lead singer's vocal style is a bit more yelling than growling, muh environment
rage over a tech-groove backdrop

fuck. *Gojira

OP obviously has shit taste. What is there to be confident about?

Boris is hipster garbage.

New In Flames? That shits garbage.

In Flames is garbage

There is nothing I hate more than hipster garbage.

Boris is not hipster garbage. Try actually listening to an album by them, then come back.

Fair enough, mate. I still like Whoracle and Jester Race.

How the actual fuck has nobody said Mastodon yet, they're technical, ragey, no death metal growls, and I can't think of anything cringey about them

Gojira and Mastadon are already pretty up my alley. Magma is pretty good and Once More Round The Sun is decent enough, even though I haven't dug as much into Mastadon.
Actually pretty into Baroness, but my favorite album by them is Yellow & Green which is hardly metal at all.

Fuck it. Just recommend me some decent Sludge metal
Why the fuck would I listen to Opeth in the first place if I weren't some thin skinned pussy?

Honestly just listen to Mastodon's discog chronologically, Once More Round the Sun is my least favorite of theirs by far

Neurosis
Isis
Cult of Luna

these fall a bit more into the post-metal umbrella but fuck, Neurosis has a highly rewarding but tough catalogue, and every post-metal band just copies the fuck out of them

It came highly recommended to me by a friend. Which is why it's the one I've listened to the most so far. I've also heard Crack The Skye and Leviathan.
