One of my favorite bands of all time. Admittedly I haven't been much of a fan of David's latest endeavors but still I cherish the earlier albums.

I like their folkier stuff before the album in the OP. Dogs Blood Rising and Swastikas for Noddy are really damn good and I want to hear more like them.

This. I do love the neofolk stuff but I'd love for Tibet to have put out more straight up industrial shit. Falling Back in Fields of Rape is brutal.

Thunder Perfect Mind and Of Ruine are both fucking great albums, Introduction To Suffering has some real solid versions on it and Birth Canal Blues is a great EP. Oh and Island with HOH is worth listening to as well.

All the Pretty Little Horses is the first C93 album I've heard, I'm thinkin of going on to Thunder Perfect Mind afterwards

I've only listened to this. I love it.

If you liked AtPLH you'll love Thunder Perfect Mind. I usually recommend TPM as an introductory album to C93

I'm really conflicted on Current 93.

I think their first major album, Dogs Blood Rising, is actually a really lame, goofy album that's completely second rate compared to what their contemporaries like SPK, Einstürzende Neubauten, DAF, Throbbing Gristle, NON, Clock DVA, and Cabaret Voltaire were doing at the time.

However, I love All the Pretty Animals and Soft Black Stars - basically David Tibet's slightly transgressive, outsider, surrealist singer/songwriter stuff from the 00s. Here's my favorite song by them: youtube.com/watch?v=4V-Mgi1Fkio

I really love the songwriting on that one.

One thing that affected my opinion was that I actually got to know some of the people from the original San Francisco punk/industrial scene. Among them, the general consensus was that David Tibet was a hack and basically a try hard groupie of Genesis P-Orridge. They also criticized his whole spirituality/gnosticism as shallow posturing.

Of course, I'm always surprised how much pettiness there was in that scene, and how much people tried to tear each other down. So who knows how valid those criticisms are. It's also worth considering the fact that even if those people disliked him, he obviously has the support of lots of significant artists, including Nick Cave, Boyd Rice, Steven Stapleton, Andrew WK, and many others.

It would also be hypocritical of me to criticize his esoteric spirituality, considering that Wovenhand and Amebix are two of my favorite bands ever.

I think one thing that may have lended to my mixed feelings is that when I was getting into this music and meeting those people, I wasn't very confident in my own judgement or taste.

Listen to Thunder Perfect Mind, it's good. David Tibet is no hack. He's definitely put out a lot of truly unique music over his career and I don't think anybody else could've done it like he did. It helps to have a good understanding of him and his idiosyncrasies imo

One thing I kind of suspect, actually, is that back in the early 80s he might have been one of the less talented scenesters just hanging around, but he kept working at it and eventually developed into a really interesting artist.

That's probably a fair statement but I think his bizarre eschatological views and lyrics have always set him apart from the rest of the industrial scene and especially the neofolk scene, of which he is undeniably king (sorry DiJ fans, i like Douglas P as much as the next guy)

i guess they're not that unique or bizarre but i just don't believe I've ever heard music with gnostic/thelemic themes quite as esoteric and fitting as in the music of C93. it's just a unique experience in and of itself.

I wouldn't say he was try hard. In fact, I think what he was doing with the religious/pope antichrist conspiracy theory themes and sample use was pretty unique and interesting. Dogs Blood has highs and lows (high example being the ANTICHRIST yells in Locusts and low example being something like the vocal distortion on Fields of Rape). It does feel goofy and doesn't hold up as well with me as it did when I first heard it, but I think LAShTAL, Nature Unveiled, Bar Maldoror, Imperium, Pale Queens, Dawn, Happy Birthday, and Swastikas are still very powerful and interesting albums in that period between his use of Industrial and Neofolk. He says he actually split from Gen and PTV because it felt too culty. I think Stapleton might have been a bigger influence on him than Gen, but I never finished the England's Hidden Reverse book on that whole scene. According to himself he was on amphetamines and dealing with some tough times, which influenced his early output of really angry and energetic industrial soundscapes. I think you can really get that emotion in his earlier works, even if some sound a bit cheesy. He has never been that good of a singer. When he goes high, he sounds like Spongebob, and I think that's always been the case. His strength to me was always when he was more talking or yelling than trying to sing. His voice was really powerful and he had a very storyteller vibe. I actually prefer his 80s - early 90s albums, as I think his 2000s stuff (that I've heard) is more try hard with really abstract and less poetic lyrics.

Check out the book England's Hidden Reverse if you haven't already. The updated version is great.

It's really peppered on and off throughout his stuff. Obviously his earlier angry stuff has some, but he wails a lot there too.

Is neofolk really all that fascist though? From what I've gathered, most of the bands just use fascist imagery either for shock value or historic context

Davey doesn't even play at being a fash anymore though, he's fully given himself over to Coptic Christianity and Coptic imagery

Socialist neofolk would be cool

I want to like them, as I like the instrumental style, but I find the vocals annoying. I wish I could get past them.

I really can't stand David Tibet's meandering wishy washy barely there vocal style. He seems to almost improvise his vocal parts, and not at all well. This is not even to mention the obnoxious prattish sound of his voice. I have read in an interview with him that he uses the first take almost all of the time too. I'm not sure if he meant that to be impressive, but it shows. His lyrics should be something I love - as I'm a sucker for that kind of thing. It's just not though. It's far too self involved. Although he occasionally turns up lyrical gems or gripping vocal performances the vast majority of what I've heard of his work is awful, pretentious, self-important wank. His work with Ligotti is amazing, but Ligotti is amazing.

It's a bad look when the only constant member of a band is consistently the least talented. Some of the music on I Am The Last of All the Field That Fell is fucking amazing, beautiful stuff. The dissonant contemporary piano playing by Reiner Van Houdt is especially chilling stuff.

Then comes Tibet and fucks it all up with his pretentious gnostic bullshit.
