I'm a fedora edgy gommie but this is false. Communists in the Spanish Civil War were a minority from the start to the end of the Republic. Spanish revolutionary left-wingers were always closer to Anarchism than Communism. The Republicans included all kinds of democrasts, socialists, anarchists, communists etc., and they usually fought each other. After Franco won the war, his propaganda apparatus portrayed it as a struggle between Soviet barbaric communism on one side and Christian civilisation on the other, that's why you get the "hurr durr Republican Spaniards were literally Stalin" discourse.
