Best 5 films you recently watched

Best 5 films you've recently seen.
>Plein Soleil
>Anomalisa
>The Hunt
>Das Boot
>Layer Cake
Unfortunately everything else I've been seeing recently has been capeshit with friends and mediocre action movies with my dad.
Also, pic related though I saw it when it came out so not so recent.

>Dark Days (comfy as fuck)
>Pi
>Bang Utot (artsy avantgarde thing I got to see at a festival with the director in the same room)
>Even Dwarfs Started Small
>White Night (same festival as Bang Utot)

Had a pretty good last couple of weeks.

Is Pi any good? Something about it makes me feel like it's gonna be bad in that "audibly groan when I realise there's still an hour left" way.

Yeah, it's very good. At first you may think it's pretentious if you think what the main character says it's representative of the director's point of view, but it becomes clear he's talking from his point of view which is one of a mentally unstable person - the plot and technical aspects of the movie are fucking great.

Cool. I'll check it out. Mind saying which festival you attended bud?

Well it was called Nofest and it was in Padua, Northern Italy - it will be held again in a month or so (the guy behind it is an anarchist and purposefully tries to fuck up this kind of conventions). Look it up if you like, the guy's blog showcases an astounding amount of really obscure movies.

>Bone Tomahawk - Loved the characters and the dialogue
>Zootopia
>Ghost World - Like Juno, but less quirky and forced. Also Enid a qt
>Blackfish
>The Salt of the Earth - One of my new favourite movies ever
>Le Planete Sauvage

>bone tomahawk
>le planete sauvage
Mah nigga
>zootopia
nevermind.

Why do people like Zootopia so much? It's almost as overrated and annoying as Frozen.

>Barry Lyndon
>Eyes Wide Shut
>2001
>Lawrence of Arabia
>In The Mood For Love
Went on a bit of a Kubrick rewatch binge

>Why do people like Zootopia so much?

I personally enjoyed it, but I can see why people wouldn't like it

>plein soleil
One of the most visually beautiful films I've seen in a while. Love how there wasn't a blaring soundtrack, especially during the boat scenes.

Barry Lyndon and 2001 are great. Didn't really like Eyes Wide Shut though for some reason. Something about it made it look very ugly to me--like head ache inducing ugly.
>Lawrence of Arabia
Really want to watch this but it's just so long. I don't have the time to watch it; it's literally an entire afternoon gone.

It's been a gud week:

>Colossal Youth
>Tabu (Gomes)
>The Turin Horse
>Written on the Wind
>La Ronde

LoA goes by pretty quick, and one afternoon is nothing

Find the time. It's such a great film

OP here. Anyone have any suggestions for films similar to Plein Soleil? pic semi related.

>La Ronde
Why are 50s to late 60s French films so based? Like Italian films from the 60s to 70s.

>La Femme Nikita (1990)
Watched it with no expectations and loved it. Very pleasant surprise. Besson's best, from what I've seen.
(Yes, I have seen Leon.)
>Inland Empire (2006)
My second favorite from Lynch, after Fire Walk With Me.
>Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)
Beautiful film.
One of my favorite soundtracks of all time.
>Straight Time (1978)
>Time Bandits (1981)

It's mainly because those were the time periods that great directors from those countries popped up. Countries with small film industries (compared to US and UK) typically rely on a hand full of directors for their best quality films.

Agreed. La Femme is Besson's best once you account for the bias that Natalie Portman naturally makes you have for Leon.

>My second favorite from Lynch, after Fire Walk With Me.
Really? Not Mulholland Drive? That's a strange choice. I don't really like Lynch much but Mulholland is an exception.

>After Hours
really like Scorsese movies and this once became one of my personal favorites pretty quick.
>Citizen Kane
finally got around to watching it after putting it off for so long. Well worthy oft he praise it gets. i thought i'd leave a little underwhelmed no matter what because it's so highly praised, but I wasn't disappointed at all
>Mulholland Drive
any film that can have you engrossed throughout and left trying to work it out afterward is a great film in my eyes
>The Raid: Redemption
awesome movie. The whole premise of going through an apartment block and just taking guys out sounded cool to me and they definitely delivered
>Alien
you all know why Alien is great

>you all know why Alien is great
I sure do.
> i thought i'd leave a little underwhelmed no matter what because it's so highly praised, but I wasn't disappointed at all
I've been fearing this as well; it's why I've been putting off watching it but I guess now I don't have an excuse.
>>Mulholland Drive
Great film. Lynch's best by far.
>>After Hours
Didn't really like it much honestly. Though that might be because I watched it during a Scorsese marathon after Taxi Driver and Goodfellas.

No, I don't like Mulholland all that much. I don't think I'd be able to articulate why, something just doesn't click for me. I know most people put it at the top of their list.

>Night Boat to Dublin
>Breathless
>La Dolce Vita
>The Count of Monte Cristo
>Wild Strawberries

Yes, I am entertained, thank you for asking Marcus.

Test.

>Bunny Lake is Missing
>Star 80
>Do the Right Thing
>Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?
>David Holzman's Diary

>The Kid
>Battleship Potemkin
>Videodrome
>Metropolis
>Rear Window
Thoughts Sup Forums?

Who are you trying to kid? You don't have any friends.

>Rear Window
The only one of his worth watching, Hitch set the bar for suspense porn but that doesn't mean he is great.

what about Vertigo, user?
I think that's pretty good.

>Love and Friendship
>Actress
>Metropolitan
>Lessons of Darkness
>Margaret (one of my all-time faves)

lolling so hard

>Arsenic & Old Lace
>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
>The Jungle Book
>Captain America: Civil War
>Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

Il deserto rosso, Predator, La Notte, 13 Hours, Tombstone.

Good list. Watch Vertigo and Das Boot.

>The Jungle Book
>TMNT
oh shit nigga what are you doing.

Already seen Vertigo, Pretty fantastic.
Will defo watch Das Boot, thanks user!

Zootopia
The Painted Veil
Room
Blade Runner
10 Cloverfield Lane

No idea whether those are really the best movies I recently saw, but just five movies I saw in the last two weeks or so that I enjoyed.

>Room
Surprised me how good that was.

great french film started in the late 20s and didnt really stop the roll till first the 40s and then the 70s

Dredd
10 cloverfield lane
The way back
Never cry wolf
Mysterious skin

The Jungle Book was very good.
The original one is my favorite movie, but the "live-action" one might be better.

And most of the bashing TMNT is getting from critics is undeserved.
The only real faults were Stephen Amell and the development of Shredder and Krang's relationship.

I think it's a subtle way to shit on FWWM.

Too far-fetched and ham-fisted, mysteries are just vehicles for morality, and this is your typical stalker revenge power fantasy for women.

Pro-tip: whenever you hear "my stalker" she is always encouraging him.

I guess that was a good morale of the movie... but a 40 y.o. bachelor detective with honeys on the side falling for this one suicide chick... c'mon...

No, outside of Moira Kelly Donna and Chester Desmond, I really enjoyed FWWM.

Miles Ahead
Batman vs Superman
Simon of the Desert
The Good Shepherd
Last Tango in Paris

>James White - I was blown away.
>VVitch
>Confessions - extremely clever thriller

>Even Dwarfs Started Small
One of my all time favorites.

Hmmmm. I guess I don't really know much about pre-50s foreign films. Any reccs to get me started?

How about 5 WORST?

>The Babadook
>It Follows
>The Loft (horrible but worth watching because it's hilarious)
>Carol (actually okay but very generic)

I can't think of a 5.

>Moira Kelly Donna
Her appearance was jarring, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I think I prefer her to series Donna overall.

A Current Affair and 20/20 can hold your attention, give misdirection about a case right to the end just as well as any Hitchcock film, that doesn't make them great.

>VVitch
How good is it? I feel like it will be another 2010s, dark but all style, no substance movie.
>Last Tango in Paris
Pretty good. Shame my conservative grandma had to walk in during the worst time for her to do that.

There will be blood (rewatched with roommate)
mr arkadin
alphaville
escape from ny
hercules of new york (one of first arnold Schwarzenegger movies)

>The Turin Horse
Didn't expect much since I didn't like Tarr's previous film (Man from London or something). But Turin Horse blew my mind. Intense apocalyptic insanity!

>>It Follows
Probably the second most overrated film of 2016 after Zootopia. Sure it's a solid film but that's it. It should be at MOST an 82% on rt, not 90-something. But maybe that's just because I have an inherent bias against horror films.

what a salient critique

>It Follows
>2016

what the fuck

>escape from ny
>hercules of new york
Very solid films. Hercules was absurd and very funny.

Define 'recently'.

>It Follows
>2016
¿qué?

I liked it because it is open for interpretation, it is up to the viewer to decide what happened during the movie.

Good visuals, decent soundtrack.

Dude. What the fuck. I bought it on DVD but I could have sworn it was only very recently when I first saw the trailer and heard about it from my friends. If it were 2015 I would understand but it was 2014. What the fuck.

What should I watch first - The lives of others or Amadeus?

>/lit/ memes
Films you've seen in the past month or two.

that's crazy brah

it was THE horror movie of 2014 and it still is brought up a lot

even many normies have seen it

Amadeus.

Flip a coin.

This feels like the setup to a horror film or psychological thriller

ya it was grade A schlock

1. gods of egypt

i didn't expect to dig this movie, but it really entertained me.

2. midnight in paris - good story and set pieces. the exposition took some hits vis a vis the characters and their motivations for acting the way they do. the opening scene suggests that the marriage is basically perfect, but subsequent scenes just show a couple in disarray. plus, some cucking involved.

3. deadpool - watched this one twice. exceptional movie. really connected

lily rader [blacked] - i really enjoyed this one. multiple views were had if you know what i'm saying. i love her work. inspirationall; hallejuea boys.

Since May 1 2016 I've watched 27 films. Of those, I would rate 11 as excellent.

>Woman in the Dunes
>Fantastic Mr. Fox
>The Leopard (Il Gattopardo)
>In the Mood for Love
>Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
>Hunger
>Volver
>Tokyo Story
>The Face of Another
>The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
>La Haine

Midnight in Paris is comfy as fuck. Deadpool is quite honestly shit.

>a hard day
>the suspect
>double life of veronique
>the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford
>bubba ho-tep

Five films I've really liked that I've seen recently:
>Bridge of Spies
not a perfect movie but one of the best historical dramas I've seen in recent years
>True Romance
Can't believe I had never seen this, it's a really fun film
>Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
When I first saw this in theaters I was pretty drunk I think and I don't remember being able to follow the story well. I watched it again recently and holy shit it's such a fucking amazingly well-made film. Really a great spy thriller, perfectly encapsulated the time period and the existential dread of living in that line of work.
>Sicario
Good movie, I think a bit overrated though. Blunt isn't a very good lead in my opinion and the script is sort of wonky and it drags in bits
>Lost Highway
Quintessential Lynchian shit

>Il deserto rosso, Predator, La Notte,
pretty good mix.

I just don't get Deadpool. I really liked Guardians of the Galaxy so I thought I'd like Deadpool but nope. It was just lame and uninteresting. Felt like watching an overly long episode of a TV show.

>The Neon Demon
>Cosmos
>High Rise
>Hiroshima, Mon Amour
>Suspiria
>Aguirre

All the good movies I've watched in the past week and a half

oh man
laughed to tears reading this exchange
thanks guys, made my morning

How good is the The Neon Demon?

desu i really enjoyed the romantic aspect of it. all that sex. and the jokes. it may not have been the most heroic of movies; it was more like a spy flikc with powers.

i guess sicario would be the best non-meme film.

>>High Rise
I am looking forward to this. Hope it lives up to the book.

It might be because I saw it a few days ago so my perception of it is too high, but I think it may have made my top 10

If you don't mind style over substance you'll like it
I typically don't care much about plot, so its all visuals for me

>Aguirre
Kinski is the absolute madman.

It really doesn't, I hesitated whether to put it or not
Literally takes one to play one well

The VVITCH, 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Untouchables, Deadpool

Worst was Deadpool, but the rest aren't far from it

i gotta agree with this user i guess the technical aspects were good but the whole time i felt like i was waiting for something that never came

>huntresses
>bvs
>monsters dark continent
>the wizard of speed and time
>purge anarchy

this is calvary, right? i've had it downloaded for months, but haven't watched it. is it worth it?

Did you like Phoenix?

don't watch too much antonioni at once, they all start blending together

>mfw the start of L'Eclisse where they refer to last night and their love is gone like at the end of La Notte
right 'bout that

what did you think of tokyo story?

Room
Sicario
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
Nightcrawler
Listen Up Philip

I can't tell if this is supposed to be the worst you saw or the best you saw.

the best recent

>>Hiroshima, Mon Amour
this has been on my watch list for a while
worth watching?

Resnais is worth watching

hey I just watched Listen Up Philip also. It was alright

.....
do you guys have a list where you write what movies have you seen already?

like a imdb account where you have a a list of watched movies or something?
