The last time I heard him gush over Japanese and French new wave was the 90s. Kill Bill was mainly influenced by 70s Kung Fu flicks, Death Proof was mainly influenced by 70s exploitation horror, Django Unchained was mainly influenced by blaxploitation and spaghetti westerns, The Hateful Eight was mainly influenced by spaghetti westerns and John Carpenter's The Thing.

I really like the central part of the movie about the boy becoming a teenager in the 50s (60s?). And the way the movie is shot is so ethereal. But the others parts work less well, I agree.
