What's the point of the american states ?
They don't have different cultures or anything, the only thing that slightly changes is the law.
Why do they exist ?
What's the point of the american states ?
You just answered your own question I think.
Each of us could be an independent country if the federation holding us together were to fail.
Some are actually distinct things with their own cultures, some are just arbitrary Amerisquares drawn by the feds to divide up empty territory bought from you, some exist for purely political reasons.
because the US is too big to be completely centralised, and they're guaranteed certain privileges over the federal government in the Constitution.
History reasons, i guess. Some of the states are based on the original 13 colonies. I don't know about the other states.
It's the same like the German states, which are based on the old "kingdoms", although the allied forces messed it up when they combined them to federal states post-WW2.
The kingdom of France has always been one big kingdom, so it makes sense you dont have states
This.
There are some that have really distinctive cultures like California, Texas, Louisiana, Hawaii, New York( but mainly it's just NYC) and I'd throw Maryland in there because it's an amalgamation of the north and south, and with D.C. there, that can give it a distinct feel and culture of it's own. The rest of the states, not saying they're exactly the same but they're more closely linked culture wise. Like Aziz Ansari talking about his parents making a move from South Carolina to North Carolina, They're probably very comfortable and accustomed to the culture of The Carolinas now.
Because you don't make a continent sized country into one single state.
Why is this even a question?
Why does France have its administrative divisions?
>US states
>administrative divisions
>Federations
>This confuses and angers the countrylets
TINY
>They don't have different cultures or anything, the only thing that slightly changes is the law.
Holy shit, how ignorant are you?
North Carolinians are leeches who drive over the border to take advantage of our cheap gas and cheap housing and then won't spend money on anything local while they're down here.
Also
>Aziz Ansari
Fucking lol
Of course a poo in loo doesn't have a problem with moving north.
top kek
Yeah, so could the states in the German Federation, what's your point?
Honestly, federations are all bullshit.
>countrylet unitary state
Runt
Is it easier to answer to 320 million people or 6.4 million?
see There isn't much difference from one state to another if you cross a border, but larger regions of the US (clusters of states, like the PNW, the Southwest, the South, New England, the flyover prairies etc.) have distinct differences
>no culture difference
If I recall, the country had a civil war over a cultural dispute.
Also, the united states is the only Federal government in the entire world. it's slow and very complicated but cannot be non legitimized due to the overkill of checks and balances. what you have is a unitary government, which means that regions have very little power interpret law differently than what the central government says. For example, French law says murder is illegal, but let's say that Bordeaux wants to legalize it. Provinces can't dictate what they want differently than what the central government wants. Which is ok for a small country, but a country that spans an entire continent and has 300 million people is a different story. The reason we have states is because different people in different areas want different things. For example, WA and CO have legalized marijuana but it is illegal federally.
So federal law enforcement can arrest you for marijuana there, but local police can't?
Also technically disqualifies you from every purchasing a gun, but the ATF can't prove anything unless you're dumb enough to fucking register yourself for a ""medical"" weed card.
like you make issues of the EU
Yes local enforcement can't arrest me for marijuana. But if I was in a federal building with marijuana, I would be charged with possession of illegal substances.
yes, and if the feds call up the state/local police and say "REE ENFORCE THE LAW" then the response they'll get is ":^)"
I like state's rights
They actually do have variable cultures, and the difference between Texas and Wisconsin is much much wider than the difference between باريس and مارسيليا, but the reason is a political philosophy called "federalism". Now, you being an Arab or negro, you're unlikely to understand the point, but it's best described as local governance.
