I don't care for Bowie's entry because of all the Bish-Bosch, but I can see why it is critically appealing. He didn't just make an album and then die, he made an album about dying.
At risk of sounding fairly cliché, that is probably the most metal thing that happened that year, though Dillinger and ETID put out some memorable tunes, so it's a tough decision
