>tablature
Lol.

oh god i need to buy a guitar now

I'm curious, how do people even come up with tunings like these? How the fuck do you know what any of the chord shapes are?

fellow "thorn is best MBV song" user checking in

what are chord shapes

so are they using non standard string gauges? how do you tune every string to the same note lol

chord fingering. like where each finger goes to make different chords. also, "shapes" like bar chords and power chords that can be moved around the fretboard

i can give you the chords, dunno if its what kevin plays though

How do you get these tunings without breaking your strings?

come in alone

this is p right

tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/m/my_bloody_valentine/come_in_alone_ver2_tab.htm

Different octaves, and dropping high strings to the tuning of lower strings.

Most of these tunings can be achieved with a regular set of 9s, especially on a Jaguar which is a shorter guitar.

you can use a capo
for instance blown a wish first tune your guitar to EBEAAF# and put a capo on 2

soon tune it to EEEEBE and put a capo on 2

Most tuning don't go any more than 2 steps above standard on some strings. It's not that hard - just use a set of 9s, or even 8s if you have a 25.5inch guitar, and do as I mentioned here

ITT OP gets everyone to destroy their guitars with improper tunings

Those guitars don't work

It won't destroy your guitar dumbass. If anything, a string might break.
If I can tune to standard with 12s, tuning to these tunings with 9s and 10s won't hurt shit.

Anyhow, here's my guitar tone for Blown A Wish. I made this a little while back, and the tuning and timing isn't totally correct, but it's close enough to get the sound. I could probably tweak the SPX-90 low pass filter setting to make it even closer. After modifying the unit, it's much brighter and sucks less tone.

Sounds broken?

sound good but are you using a compressor before the reverse reverb? you shouldn't

No, it's just my Jaguar (both pickups I think) > SPX90 (early reflections reverse) > mostly clean tube amp.

i don't know it sounds like that distinctive sound of using a compressor before the reverse reverb, like its not "weightless" you can't still hear that sound of the repeats after you hit the chord

maybe the delay time is too fast? i use 76 ms

Magic

I beg you ;__;

I don't even have a compressor.

I think the problem is that I set the Liveness setting all the way up to 7. I heard that Kevin set it around 3-5.

But yeah, that's the main issue I also noticed with the recording.

For the delay time, I use the minimal setting, which is .1 ms. Using more doesn't change too much. It just makes it harder to play in time. The sound is already delayed quite a bit.

Do you use an SPX90?

nope, i use a FX500

just recorded this clyp.it/fbifbno4

this sounds good. minnieminus.bandcamp.com/releases

thank you based user time to turn one of my guitars into basically an ostrich n sludge myself into oblivion

Sounds good, definitely a smoother sound.
I'll have to try turning down the liveness once I'm home with my gear in a few days. I know I can get a sound closet to that, I've made other recording that have sounded kinda like that.

Ain't nothing on Ricky Wilson on Rock Lobster.

fourth verse chord is wrong though my mistake

Idk why MBV tabs are always dumbed down. It makes me sad because Sometimes has one of my favorite chord progressions ever.

Sometimes should be played standard half-step down (Eb). Most MBV songs are played in this tuning.

The progression goes like this:
022400 E5
X66800 D#sus4
X46600 C#m7
X02200 Asus2 (or 577600, not sure)
466X00 G# (powerchord, only mute the 3rd)
244X00 F# (powerchord, 3rd mute)
022400 E5
X44600 C#m7
X42400 C#m7* (different shape)
X66800 D#sus4
X46600 C#m7
022400 E5
repeat

Don't get put off by the fancy chord names, it's real easy to play. You'll notice immediately how much of an impact those subtle chord voice changes make. Also, notice how the progression is a lot longer than you might expect. That's why the song feels like it could loop for infinity, because it tricks you into not realizing when the progression is starting or ending. People often praise MBV and Kevin Shields for their innovations in tone and production, but the songwriting is criminally overlooked sometimes.

Also, try practicing it first without any distortion. The articulation of some of the chords can be hard to hear at first if you're using a really noisy distortion, but you'll realize those subtle chord changes create a big impact on the tone (if you're using the right distortion).
