Pick a year

Pick a year.

Name the movie that one Best Picture for that year of production at the Academy Awards then name a more befitting winner.

I'll start with the most two most obvious ones.

1979
>Winner: Kramer vs Kramer
>What should have won: Apocalypse Now

1980
>Winner: Ordinary People
>What should have won: Raging Bull

>Name the movie that one Best Picture

2006
>Winner: Crash
>What should have won: Capote

Fuck. Didn't even notice. No need to let it derail the thread though.

>Not Brokeback

But seriously, any one of the other nominees would have been a better choice.

>2015
>Winner: Birdshit
>Should have won: Not that piece of shit Birdshit

>1990
>Dances with Wolves
>what should've won : Goodfellas

1990
>Dances with Wolves
to
>Goodfellas

>1985
>Out of Africa
to
>Back to the Future or Brazil or something, who cares about Out of Africa

1976 (too obvious)
>Rocky to Taxi Driver

>1976 (too obvious)
>Rocky to Taxi Driver

I don't know if that's an obvious choice. It's my favourite from the year but Network is a classic and just as high quality and All the President's Men is also fantastic. I love Rocky but it really doesn't compare to those three.

1999.
>Winner: SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE
>What should have won: Saving Private Ryan.

I'll pick an obvious one.

2010
>Winner: The King's Speech
>What should have won: The Social Network

1941
>Winner: How Green Was My Valley
>What should have won: Citizen Kane
1958
>Winner: Gigi
>What should have won: Vertigo
1969
>Winner: Oliver!
>What should have won: 2001: A Space Odyssey
1957
>Winner: Around the World in 80 Days
>What should have won: The Searchers (didn't even get a single nomination)

>Goodfellas better than Dances with Wolves

Exactly what a redditor would think.

Incredible argument there. You sure showed us

inb4 whatever year Shakespeare in Love won and Saving Private Ryan
aw shit I waited too long to post it

Anyway,
2010
>Winner: The King's Speech
>What should have won: Toy Story 3

2012
>winner The Artist
to
>Shame

How Green is my Valley is a lovely film and Donald Crisp is a good dadfu but it's still mindblowing that it beat Citizen Kane. There's not one single way in which it's better than Kane.

2006
>Winner: Crash

>What should have won: Literally any other film ever made. Even films that didn't fall into that years oscar window.

The Artist is a terrible movie, I don't know if shame deserved it but it was way better

1966
>Winner: A Man For All Seasons
>What should have won: The Good The Bad The Ugly
Everyone agrees on this right?

The Oscars are completely meaningless anyway. The true indicator of a great movie is if it still gets praise years after its release

2002
>Winner: fucking Chicago
>What should have won: The Pianist or Lord of the Rings

>wahhh they make me feel bad about being racist

Crash maybe didn't deserve to win best picture but come on, there's no place in the world that hates it as much as Sup Forums

Babel was better; Crash was just more plebeian

1994: Forrest Gump
To
The Shawshank Redemption

Dude everyone hates Crash, not just Sup Forums.

this
only turboplebs care about the Oscars

>taking the oscars seriously

>Shawshank
>not Pulp Fiction

True indicator is box office performance.

Kane wasn't recognized though upon release. They just didn't understand it back in a day. What I'm talking about is deep focus, ceilings, non-linear narrative.

No, it is better.

Hellooooooo reddit

>you don't like crash
>clearly you are Sup Forumstard

Flawless logic there mate.

In reality my political leanings are nothing of the sort. By the standards of the rabid internet conservatives I would most likely be deemed a "sjw" or god forbid a "cuck"

That doesn't just change the fact that Crash is literally one of the most obnoxious movie experiences I've ever had. A preachy mess that perhaps has its heart in the right place and some messages I can dig but is still completely unwatchable due its delivery and execution.

Forrest Gump > Pulp Fiction

Bonjour Reddit!

holy shit inception was nominated this year

Hola Reddito!

Yeah, so?

samefag
>le shawshank is the greatest movie of all time meme xDD
Fucking kill yourself, senpai

i think it's funny that they would nominate such a mediocre movie

2009
>Winner: The Hurt Locker
>should have won: The Cuckold

Oh, I thought you were suggesting it should've won.

Same guy you responded to

Again, I would recommend Babel as it's a much more worldly (literally, it takes place in various locations in the world) experience and isn't as incredibly hamfisted as Crash.

bon giorno, redditino
uno farto a minuto 3:17??

Terrible samefagging

Just go back to sleep if you're this bored

>get called out on your plebeian taste
>s-samefag xD
I bet you also think Breaking Bad is the best show ever, huh, champ?

Every year there's a completely mediocre movie nominated for best picture.
Most years, those mediocre movies actually win best picture.

Crash was 2005

Back to reddït with you kid

They still gave it the Oscar for best screenplay. It was a critical success and widely loved by those who saw it but failed to make back it's budget, mainly because Hearst systematically tried to destroy it and a lot of people were scared of him.

>Inception has been constantly put in the top 20 in recent top 100 lists in many publications

Jesus Christ. It was a pretty good movie but nothing more. Why do people praise it so much?

>thinks shawshank is anything more than a good saturday afternoon flick
I bet you think Speed Racer and BvS are absolute kinography

I don't think Shawshank is the greatest movie of all time, but it's a hell of a lot better than Pleb Fiction. Tarantino is fucking cancer.

Says the actual cancer

If Pulp Fiction wasn't so widely adored contrarian Sup Forums posters would love it. I still do.

The average moviegoer is an idiot that though Inception was a mindfuck

Because it's babby's first surreal (barely) movie with a complex (lol) plot.
People like the movie because it makes them feel smart because they understand it.

Maybe you should go back to where you came from. I heard they love Pulp Fiction over there.

Up boated my good sir!

Citizen Kane and Vertigo are overrated.

I unironically think Gigi and How Green was my valley are better films.

You speak the true true

>Pulp Fiction

I think pic related should've won over Spotlight.

...

>shawshank>pulp fiction
This, kids, is called le reddit cancer

...

Fuck you

hjhgj

Forrest Gump is the least reddit of the three

>1982
Winner: Chariots of Fire
Should have won: Raiders

Lmao sure kid.

>They just didn't understand it back in a day. What I'm talking about is deep focus, ceilings, non-linear narrative.
John Ford used ceilings at least as early as 2 years before Citizen Kane in Stagecaoch.

I'm not sure exactly what you think is "non-linear" about the narrative either. It's just a framing device and then it goes back in time. This isn't Eisenstein or anything.

As for deep focus, I don't think it's realistically that impressive.

I understand that it was influential to a lot of directors I respect but the film is an overwrought mess of banal symbolism.

>Shawshank not better than Pulp Fiction
No, that is what we call reddit cancer.
Pulp Fiction isn't a bad flick, but Shawshank Redemption is infinitely better.
I bet the only reason you think Pulp Fiction is better is because it had
>lol so much violence, dae remember when they raped that guy xD

Are you retarded? Pulp Fiction is certified reddit garbage.

Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption are all very "reddit" movies (not necessarily bad ones), for whatever it signifies.

I mean Shawshank is used as a film study in high school English classes, while being completely accessible (it's fucking Stephen King). It's about as reddit as a movie can get.

>uses reddit as a measure of quality
>reddit says tomato, Sup Forums says tomahto
>everything reddit likes, Sup Forums automatically hates
>mfw reddit controls what Sup Forums likes

Having actual critical thinking is out of question, I see.
Happy you like being controled.
Good for you, little man.

I'm pretty sure reddit hates Forrest Gump because it beat Pulp Fiction

You now realise those movies are older than the average redditor

And Shawshank is not, right?

I don't give a shit about reddit and neither should the rest of you

I really don't.

Are you honestly surprised?
Sup Forums is so obsessed with cuckolding, they're being cuckolded by Reddit's opinion on everything.

It is. But that was in response to an user who implied liking Shawshank more was reddit. Clearly, it isn't.

Oh my god... Oh no... Oh god no...

Because a fucking Top 250 says so. It must be the truth!

2010
>Winner: The King's Speech
>What should have won: The Social Network

More redditors voted it as their favorite movie, so yes, it's true. Just admit your taste is as reddit as it gets.

My taste is as reddit as it gets. :)

Not exactly related to the subject, but Rosamund Pike not winning best actress for Gone Girl was a travesty. Julianne Moore won for some forgettable flick instead.

>2003
>Last Samurai not even nominated

>The Academy is full of retards and/or plebs
>More news at 11

If you're going to shit on Tarantino, Pulp Fiction is the last film you'd want to do it with. Shawshank is pure Oscar bait btw

t. redditor

>>wahhh they make me feel bad about being racist
crash largely condones or excuses racism. it's just a bad movie.

1984
>Winner: Amadeus
>What should have won: Once Upon A Time In America

ITT: Mafia films are automatically masterpieces

the year wall e was nominated
>winner: whatever wall e lost against
>what should have won: wall e

No

Yes
