I think if there was a chance for a radical socialist to upset the DNC it would have been this year. That ship may have already sailed. It really depends on why Trump won. Was it galvanization of the under-educated factory towns? Or was it the absolute lack of enthusiasm for Clinton. If the latter, there is an argument that a far left candidate could be a shoe-in -- after all, the DNC has spread themselves too thin and leaned far to moderately. On the other hand, if it was a surge in enthusiasm for nationalism, then the DNC is toast and the left is dead in this country.

There's every reason to believe virtually all of these votes would have gone to Sanders. Sanders was effectively a 3rd party candidate, as was Trump, and these voters did not support Trump. 10% of the 18-44 vote would have been more than enough to swing battleground states the other way.
