Prog rock thread

heard roundabout through jojo memes and from there i got into king crimson. what other albums should i check out?

Glad you're enjoying it beyond the meme anime value.
Albums to listen to (in order listed preferably, from most to least accessible):
1. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound, Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

2. King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King, In The Wake of Poseidon, Discipline, Lark's Tongue in aspic, Starless and Bible Black, Red

3. Gentle Giant - Octopus, Acquiring The Taste (these guys are particular oddballs so be ready for that)

4. Jethro Tull - Aqualung, Thick as a Brick

5.Robert Fripp - Exposure

6. Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts, Godbluff, H To He

There are more but those are my personal favourite prog albums/bands.

start from the mainstream staples of the genre, they are pretty good so you won't miss out
check out every prog album on the wiki first
also obligatory
>learns prog from anime

>tfw you use up all the budget for the anime on licensed music

another thing i'm wondering about is how do yall digest music when listening to a new album? cause for me it takes like 10 full listens till i can get into an album sometimes

Camel's first two albums are a must
soft machine's stuff with wyatt
in the land of pink and grey
henry cow in praise of learning
khan space shanty
amon duul ii yeti and phallus dei
magma kobaia

Also check out Rush, either start with 2112 or moving pictures

Deloused in Comatorium

Jus ta couple obscure ones I can recall off the top

Soft Machine

Release Music Orchestra

Ruphus

earliest response is the response of the highest quality

lol is that jojo song

Aphrodites Child - 6 6 6

in and around the lake

>he got into prog through JoJo
Pleb. True patricians get into prog through GTA V.

Excellent post.
I would add that Foxtrot is the greatest album of all time, so you may be disappointed that nothing comes close to its sheer perfection. Even ItCotCK, the album that basically created prog, is not as perfect (Moonchild, anyone?).

Drama is the best Yes album

>3. Gentle Giant - Octopus, Acquiring The Taste (these guys are particular oddballs so be ready for that)
I would also add, check out live performances on these guys. Their albums are really good but never really captured the sheer energy, playfulness & joy of their concerts.

Not to mention, holy shit instrument changes everywhere

Add to this:

Rush - 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres
Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Tarkus, Brain Salad Surgery, maybe Works
Genesis - Trick of the Tail (no Peter Gabriel, but still really good)
Hawkwind - Hall of the Mountain Grill (less prog, more rock, but you might like it)
Yes - Drama (Trevor Horn on vocals, more aggressive, more accessible)

A Trick of the Tail by Genesis is all you'll need

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - s/t, Pictures at an Exhibition, and Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends

Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory, In a Glass House

Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells, Ommadawn

Marillion - Clutching at Straws

Renaissance - Live at Carnegie Hall

FM - Black Noise

Kenso - Kenso + Kenso II

Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways, Stupid Dream

Magma - Live/Hhai, MDK, Udu Wudu

False but Drama is good nonetheless

>no Brain Salad Surgery

I got into prog through Steven Wilson

>it has been one year already
I'm still sad

this is a really nice post, a lot of great recs. Good on you user :)

Honestly Jojocore isn't that bad, tastewise. It's basically just Dadcore+.

Fuck all you bitches that reduce the amazing grace of Yes to a mere meme.

Dude, it's almost a year since Emerson shot himself. 2016 was not kind to prog.

is pink floyd good even though it's meme tier?

All the tracks worth listening to from BSS are on Welcome Back My Friends, unless you really like the psuedo-live production on BSS over an actual live album.

This is a good chart. Of particular note (assuming you've already listened to the discographies for all of the giants like Floyd, Yes, and KC) are 666 by Aphrodite's Child, Leviathan S/T, and Alphataurus S/T.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh no, how about you fuck off?

>Jerusalem
>Toccata
>Still You Turn Me On
>All of Karn Evil 9

>Chart contains all of Egg except their only good album

POLITE FORCE

Floyd is great. Their best prog is Wish You Were Here IMO.
Also check out 2112 and Moving Pictures by Rush

>Lateralus
Kek what is that album doing there
It also seems to have a different cover

Yes, what about those tracks? All of those are on WBMF and I think they sound better on it than they do on BSS?

Yeah, especially their early work. Meddle is GOAT.

This is probably one of my favorite albums of all time, so I'd also recommend this.

Lateralus is a good progressive metal album though. Admit it, if it weren't for their cancerous fan base Tool would be much more well received on Sup Forums.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

>Jethro Tull
Holy shit kill yourself for liking this

Underrated band

>not liking Jethro Tull and awesome flute solos
Shit taste fag

Maybe you are the faggot, just look at his clothes

Listened to Frances the Mute for the first time yesterday and iot's fucking amazing. Is their other music any better?

>dead can dance
explains a lot about some of their music

better not necessarily but it's all worth listening to, along with a large chunk of omar's solo work/side projects

Has anyone ever found that Farmyard album? There are no links anywhere
