I don't know if it was the studio who did it, but the initial director's cut of American History X was some sort of disaster and only major interference and recutting could make it vaguely watchable.

usually when something like that happens its because a producer brings in another professional editor to recut the movie as they see fit, though, like what happened with A New Hope. I'm talking about literal studio-mandate cuts, like when Universal demanded 45 minutes of footage be cut from Warcraft and we ended up with a horribly paced film and underdeveloped characters, or when WB demands ~30 minutes be cut from BvS and the plot barely makes sense anymore.

I'm actually not sure of what occurred in the case of AHX - I've never seen it and had never heard about it undergoing major recuts. I'm just triggered by studios fucking with people's movies because of shit like The Keep and Once Upon a Time in America and Fantastic 4 (read about Josh Trank's initial plans for the film, seriously), and it just blows my mind that they still think its a good idea to step in, ever.
