I do SCA-esque medieval combat, not hand-to-hand, but I do end up in more team fights than the generally duel-centered serious martial arts scene.
Fear is the only thing a solo fighter can use against multiple enemies. If you can't intimidate the other two for a few seconds while you deal with the first, you're gonna get ganked hard. Hesitation is absolutely crucial in uneven fights. If the junkies move first and move together, the UFC guy is gonna need to make zero mistakes and use headgame skills that are irrelevant for 1v1 fights.
If the UFC guy steals the hammer at the beginning of the fight, the junkies are gonna take a second to process the new situation even if it doesn't scare them. Then he stands a good chance. But that will be very hard against people who don't hesitate in the beginning.

I have seen several people literally beaten to death in bar parking lot fights.
I think those _without_ formal martial arts training, this can be anything including boxing, often get beaten to death.
I have also been hit in the head with tire irons and hammers - it is not like the movies.
