I wouldn't think that has anything to do with it. I live in the UK and the people I know who liked Dubstep when it was coming out weren't ever into Garage or Jungle or anything that came before it in terms of what was popular rave music in UK, and they mainly listened to shitty pop/metal/hip-hop. Hence why it was interesting that it became as popular as quickly as it did.
