It sounds dumb, but just making toast over a fire is kinda fun and works no matter the fire size. Plus you can put anything on it and make it just how you like it.

Sorry, only just saw this. I'd say try to stay north of Hall Road/20 Mile. Really anywhere north of 10 Mile will be tolerable, but the nicer parts start around Hall. Starting at about 35 Mile it turns country though, which for me is perfect but may not be what you want. Just don't go too far north unless you so go east, otherwise you'll wind up in Flint (which isn't that bad either, but stay out of the city and drive a Chevrolet if you do go there).

Thanks for the advice, driving a Malibu now so car is fine, and compared to South Dakota anywhere is more urban. I'm looking into East Lansing but would be alright anywhere
