From a writers perspective the man was obviously a perfect caricature in so many ways. For one, he was the exact opposite of the baby boomers (that presumably wrote the show) in so many ways: gruff, not very charismatic, very old-school conservative. Was the antithesis of "guy you would want to have a beer with."

Secondly, the man resigned in disgrace (the only president to have done so), which would make him an obvious target even if nothing else did. That makes him an easy target as well, since Republicans and Democrats alike disavowed him after Watergate. Any other president might make half the audience laugh and piss off the other half.


Lastly, and most importantly, Nixon was actually insane:
* He literally penned and updated an 'enemies list', which is something that only paranoid people do
* His nuclear weapon policy employed something called "Madman theory" where he tried to intimidate the Soviets by convincing them that he was an irrational, volatile, foaming-at-the-mouth lunatic. Like he would launch a squadron of bombers towards the USSR (which the Soviets could see on radar/satellite, so it would look like a possible nuclear attack) and randomly recall them halfway, then do the same thing again a week later.
* Was drunk off his ass during the invasion of Cambodia

And the fucking Watergate tapes... imagine if you found out that in private, Obama or GWB were actually angry and/or drunk all the fucking time, and they frequently went on obscenely racist, antisemitic paranoid rants that would be more at home on Stormfront than the nation's highest office. Something completely and utterly contrary to his public image, like a rabid dog rather than a statesman.

Nothing makes me laugh harder than transcripts of Nixon going on a drunken antisemitic rant while Kissinger awkwardly agrees with him.

But he was still a pretty good president, all things considered.

Considering the Iran/Iraq war didn't start until September of 1980, and Carter was defeated that November, I find it unlikely that Carter had time to fund weapons to both of them while they were fighting.
