The idea rural people are "rednecks" and vote conservative because they're "uneducated" is a salty meme that started in the 1980's. Liberals were in a political coalition with conservatives and had been since the 1950's, but in the 80's they messed with trade unions, a major source of income for people in rural america and thus conservative voters. Conservatives then pulled out of this coalition and stopped cooperating with liberal interests, the words "liberal" and "conservative" came into their present political meaning at that time. Repulicans deemed themselves conservatives and wanted nothing to do with the word "liberal".

The liberal response to this was bitterness, as things proceeded it became a meme within liberal culture that non-rich rural conservatives "voted against their own self-interest" because they were "uneducated" when it was in fact because of the political distrust their own actions had created. Whenever I see liberals engage in this "hicks" meme it sounds no different to me than some fat jerk bitching about his ex-girlfriend and how "she was a stupid bitch anyway". Using this meme reinforces conservative distrust of liberals, they won't even do you the favor of remembering you're just bitter and will frame you as enemies of the home culture/state because their conservative values are just as ingrained into them as this salty meme is into you.

In most respects, I do lean towards the progressive side, so traditionally I have voted democrat.

However, this year the democratic candidate was completely unacceptable. Hillary was so iconic for everything wrong with politics that I really had no choice but to vote Trump. Bernie is a socialist, but at least he's a well meaning socialist. Kasich probably would have been my top pick, since he's a fairly moderate and centrist Republican, but he didn't last that long in the game.
