I went in after getting more into my religion when I was in college. I was very gung ho. After a while in the seminary I knew I didn't want to do it for the rest of my life.

Yeah I'd say that more than half drop out easily. The no-marriage/no sex thing is a big reason. I don't think the pedophilia thing is as rampant as you may think though, at least now within the last 20-30 years. Some of that happens but most of the rampant and worst stuff was in the 1960s and 70s

1)I did 2 years of pre-thelogy and 2 years of theology. So, Some philosophy, Latin, Greek, Patristics, Christology, REvelation, Some Scripture, Some homiletics courses, Moral theology.
2) Ratzinger excellent contemporary theologian. Philosopher, I'd have to think more about that.
3)Good question. I'd say those who decide they want to become a priest and stick with it no matter what. Probably a little harder for type A personalities and the argumentative, aggressive types. There is a lot of evaluating going on and hoops to jump through.

He is not the "divine authority". He is the ultimate authority as far as running the mechanics of the Church but bishops also have a real authority - teaching and governing. The pope is also not supposed to create any any new doctrine or change doctrine but guard it and make sure it is faithfully taught. He is also supposed to do so clearly, and that is a big part of the Pope Francis problem.

I think that the ambiguity means that material heresy could be present but it is a hard call to make. Who is going to make that judgment on the pope? Formal heresy would be very blatant and contradictory but I don' tthink he is there yet. Probbaly another reason he didn't answer the cardinals.
