Hey, Sup Forums

Hey, Sup Forums.

Your friendly, neighborhood head and neck surgeon here.

Ask me your medical questions and such.

Why did you put a bike chain in his head? Are you turning him into a bicycle?

Where did you go to school

This

Yes, part of an experimental treatment to cure cancer.

1. None of these pictures are my own. They are from internet or textbooks for HIPAA reasons
2. Looks like a reconstruction plate which forms base template to reconstruct mandible.

Very slight hunchback. Friends say its really not noticeable unless pointed out.

What can I do to get rid of it?

If I smoke two cigarettes a day instead of half a pack or a full pack, would that greatly reduce my chances of getting cancer?

Undergrad at top 15 US institution
Med school at decent state school
ENT residency at decent program
Head and neck surgical oncology/microvascular reconstruction fellowship at top program

Head and neck is a very small world. There are about 15-20 trained in US per year. I'm not divulging more than that.

My anus has been bleeding a bunch lately. I'm on vacation with the fam and doing lots of hiking, dad buys cheap tp too

Wat do?

what can be done to make the lower jaw narrower?

also how long is the healing time for orthognathic surgery and how much bone can be removed from the upper jaw?

Would this guy survive given that they probably had only basic medical equipment in Syria:

liveleak.com/view?i=584_1328471434

I've seen similiar from WW I, so I guess yes.

Sorry, bunch is vauge, like making it so I have to wipe every hour or muss my underwear up

Are you the same surgeon that's been doing this for years now? It's always a head and neck surgeon.

What made you want to get into head and neck surgery?

Could probably see an orthopedic surgeon to have it corrected. Not sure what they could offer, but it would probably be horrific with many months of rehab.

The general cutoff for increased risk of cancer is 1 one pack year over ten years ("10 pack-year history").

Still, quit, you fucking moron. All these pics are smokers for a reason.

I'm not sure about narrowing. I usually read about anterior/posterior changes using Lefort I osteotomies, but I'm not an orthognathic surgeoon. Preop prep is long (in terms of braces) and postop recovery is a few months (usually 2-3).

stop taking so much advil

>not OP

Hello sir!

How do you determine/estimate where to cut and in what direction on the face to not crosscut muscles and blood vessels?

>liveleak.com/view?i=584_1328471434

Yeah. Barriers to survival would be:
1. immediately obtaining airway (and it wouldn't be hard to intubate that and trach)
2. preventing major vascular blowout (wouldn't be too hard to cover with local/regional flaps).

Yes, I do one of these every few months.

Great anatomy, love taking care of cancer patients, you're the last line of defense between these people and death.

what about cannabis?

Any theories on what the long term affects of daily cannabis users will be?

Looking for your personal thoughts/feelings on this subject

You're doing god's work user, carry on.

How would I cure neck cancer should I ever get it

My jaw cracks quite loudly when biting, is it dangerous?

I'm 14 and want to be a surgeon when I'm older.
(I understand that this is cringey and it probably doesn't make it beter that im pointing that out)

I really fucking hate middle school, and my grades aren't the greatest. However, I think it is safe to say I'm somewhat intelligent. What advice can you give me for my future and career?

are you dr.strange

medic fag here. Had a pt with a huge laceration to the throat. Used TXA, and hemostatic powder to control bleeding. He still ended up dying once in hospital. Any advice on treating lacerations to the neck/throat you would recommend for a medic god forbid I have to deal with that shit show again

Go see a doctor, you probably have hemorrhoids, but could have cancer.

We generally try to place incisions within relaxed skin tension lines (where wrinkles would be) and know where muscles and vessels are.

I've seen a few patients with tongue cancer from cannabis abuse. I think it's a stupid drug. Makes you unmotivated and boring, and carries all the risks of unfiltered cigarettes.

Surgery or radiation, depending on site and staging.

I'm dying but it's on the slow side. I've got one of the worse versions of porphyria. I'd like to speed things along.

Any suggestions on ways I could ensure my death that would look accidental? Some kind of head/neck trauma that's unlikely but shucks, who would even know how to die like that?

5 parameters used to interpret cardiac rhythms include?

Answer faggot. Dont use google you little bitch

I just got accepted to medical school. Is surgery and all those years worth it? How was your life , social and $$$ wise, during residency. Are you paying off loans fine? Are your hours ok? I'm assuming your going to be or already are a family man. I like medicine, but I kind of want to not work like a dog while I'm an attending. Thanks

Not OP but med student, first off underage b&

Secondly stop fucking around with your grades if you want any chance, unless you're 'severely disadvantaged' you need good grades and test scores. Middle school grades don't mean shit, dont get lower than a 3.5 per quarter/trimester in HS, take as many AP's as possible

oh yeah forgot to say,

mods please don't ban me

ok im safe now. And thank you. In high school I'm just gonna work my ass off like crazy to get straight A's. It'll be hell but it'll be awesome.

When I had brain surgery the guy next to me in the recovery ward had a vertibre removed and replaced
Do u do this?

How much consultation work do you get from oral surgeons?

nah there will be no aspect of awesomeness, it's gonna fucking suck. then college will suck with 20x more work, until you actually start doing what you want and getting medical internships it sucks

It's not dangerous, but it is like arthritis of the jaw. It will worsen and you will have pain constantly from it.

You need perfect grades from here until the end of time. You need to stop making excuses. No one gives a shit about "intelligent but lazy". The world wants "hardworking, intelligent is a bonus". Work your fucking ass off. The harder you work the luckier you get.

The fact that you're making excuses and have shitty grades means you'll probably never have a shot at med school. Sorry, bro.

No

The only life-threatening bleeds in the head and neck are injuries to carotid or jugular. Hold pressure (one firm finger to stop bleeding) until patient gets to OR. If patient dies before then, it is what it is. Hemostatic powder ain't going to stop an arterial bleed. Put your finger on the bleed and hold pressure until patient gets to OR.

I've spent over two hours with my fingers going numb on major vascular bleeds, waiting to get patient to OR for control.

Why does it have to look accidental?

#1 I'm an otolaryngologist, so I haven't used a stethoscope in a decade, let alone interpreted an EKG.
#2 Rate, rhythm, axis, ST interval, T wave changes? PR interval? I don't fucking know.

College can not possible any worse than middle school. I firmly believe that last year was the worst year of my entire life.

W-1 ewr

What if I change right now? From here on out if I get straight A's, no excuses, and work my ass off. Then do I have a shot?

Occasionaly I get a prick of pain right below my left shoulder that will spread out like it's following nerves.

Usually isn't that bad, once or twice a month. But the recent one was worst yet and spread all the way to my right shoulder.

What is.

Although I am planning on some life insurance, I'd rather not upset my mom.

depends on what made your HS bad. college sucks because of work load, and as a white guy I gotta do 20x the amount of stuff as any PoC bc employer's want 'diversity', so I have 3 jobs, am doing research, and am taking 17 credits which just sucks. if you get bullied and have no friends in HS, college will probs be better

Not op: If you want work life balance consider dermatology.

>>
Oh. My HS wasn't bad. I'm still in MS. Hs is next year. mods dont ban me

im doing step 1 soon, did you use qbanks or did you prepare it with actual lectures and books?

also, whats a tako tsubo myocardiopathy? no googlerino

It's worth it if you can't see your life without surgery. I love operating. I would rather operate than see friends or sleep in on a Saturday or go home at 5pm during week. If you can do that, it's worth it.

Social life during residency and fellowship was awful. Spent a few hours on weekend usually sleeping off sleep debt from week. I can pay off lines just fine.

No family, a few relationships, but not engaged. Currently single.

Being a surgeon is about working like a dog. Your life is your job. Everything else is secondary. I love working like a dog.

Agree.

No, I don't. Some ENTs help the neurosurgeons or orthopods with anterior approaches to cervical spine, but none of the guys in my hospital do so.

My practice is largely benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck.

A good amount. We have a good relationship.

I get some oral tumors from them, I send them patients with deep neck infections who need edentulation, cancer patients who need edentulation, sleep apnea patients who want oral appliances, and TMJ patients who would benefit from bite blocks.

Do u ever look at the titties of unconscious patients and fap after?

why is it that every single pic you are posting is cancer related?
post a thyroidectomy or something, im getting depressed u faggot

Don't point out the fact that you're underage b& and mods will be less likely to notice

Not specifically a head/neck surgery question, but what are your thoughts on LSD, medically speaking.
Compared to other schedule 1 drugs, how does it negatively impact a person on a long-term mental or physical level?
Have you ever taken it, if not, would you?

>thyroidectomy aren't often cancer related

How often do you suck cock you faggot?

Lol nothing compares to med school, except residency, which is much, much worse in terms of personal demands.

Well, yes, because you're young. So crush high school, get good grades in high school which will let you go to a top college affiliated with a med school, and go from there.

No idea.

Not interested in helping you commit suicide. See a psychiatrist.

Very true. My field is one of the worst for work/life balance.

I graduated within last decade. I used UWorld and Kaplan qbanks in addition to First Aid and studying from my lectures. Step 1 score >260.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is apical ballooning of left ventricle related to severe emotional distress, named after Japanese octopus traps.

I can't believe I remember that and not how to interpret an EKG, lol.

Could be hyperthyroidism

I'm 36 and have bulging or herniated discs in L1 - L5. I also have arthritis and severe stenosis on the right side. Whenever I stand/walk for ~2 blocks or 5 minutes , I get a burning pain through hip and leg goes numb.
I want avoid surgery, surgeon says spinal fusion, at all costs. Tips?

Then why on earth did you reply in the first place? It certainly wasn't for my benefit.

What's a psychiatrist going to do, tell me that I'll have a full and fulfilling life as this slowly destroys my brain?

I got a newsflash for you: check your elder peers, quite a lot of older MDs kill themselves when their quality of life begins to drop.

I hope that, when you get older, when you're infirm, someone jerks you around like you just did to me and you can reflect on that.

Sometimes I think they have a nice set, but never really think of them sexually. Never fapped.

My patients entrust their lives to me.

I'm a head and neck cancer surgeon. Thyroidectomies (while a big chunk of my practice) are boring pics for a Malaysian frogposting board.

I'm a strong libertarian and think all drugs should be legal.

My thoughts on cannabis are above.

I strongly believe in LSD as a positive tool for mankind.

Never, you faggot

Jesus user what did you do to yourself?

What do you think of chiropractors and acupuncturists?

you have made plenty of these threads right?

I cooked for 10 years while I got my shit together worked my way through school. 10 hours a day over a grill 5 days a week sucks. I also have shitty genetics.

ALL drugs? Even heroin?

Can you expand on that argument? Also I'm impressed with your advocation for LSD and aversion to pot.

I do a good number of thyroids for hyperthyroidism, compressive symptoms, benign nodules in addition to cancer.

I don't know much about spinal surgery. However, the data is best for nerve symptoms (burning pain/weakness/numbness), so I would get opinions from a few different spine surgeons and go with whoever you trust.

Accupuncture actually has some evidence in chronic pain. Chiropractors are chalatans.

I make one about every other month for last few years. So yeah.

Thanks for answering the question about work life balance. I guess somebody has to do surgery, so they better like it. I can't imagine myself with those hours. I'm interested in ER or psych. But honestly I want to see what I can do with MD degree that's different. Some people make apps, get into pharmaceuticals, shit like that. ---- any first and second year tips?

Hi

lol kek user

why not just google ways to kill yourself?

Look up the statute in your state -- in FL you can kill yourself after having a life insurance plan for 3 (4?) years and they still pay out by law. so if suicide is really on your mind for that long... no worries! :c

I first saw your thread at least 3 years ago. Remember the pics.

you said that you were too busy for me to make an appointment! I demand an explanation!

OP, if I get straight A's and B's in HS, and am determined, can I be a surgeon?

not OP but engineer... only B I got in high school was in spanish

5 AP calc AB
4 APUSH
2 AP Lit and Comp
3 AP Lang

engineering school was bretty hard

I'm a staunch libertarian. What can I say. I think private citizens should be able to do anything that doesn't impinge upon the rights of otheres.

Not really sure. All I can say is that doing well opens doors for you. There are no shortcuts to success.

ay dog

Yep, I pretty much use same pics every thread. I'm lazy.

Sigh. Get into med school first. Don't whack off to the idea of surgery. It's a brutal, difficult field. You probably won't like it. Few people do.

Wow... I think being a surgeon would be good for me though. Great distraction from depression.

nice, you have earned my respect
keep giving advice and shit

Can you relate to hannibal ? The series/movies

What's worse on the throat? Heavy smoking or drinking?

Friend of mine had Jaw surgery roughly 6-7 months ago to correct a severe popping of the jaw bone on the right side

The correction failed, he's having symptoms and will likely need surgery again, is this common?

>that pic

Oh fuck, just let that poor bastard die.

engineering and i imagine pre-med is only going to make you want to kill yourself even more

buddy did chemical engineering and talked to me daily about suicide kek :c

my biggest savior was using ratemyprofessor . com -- I did have to retake 1 class in undergrad but I took it with the actual teacher (not research driven) professor and was able to get an A... College infuriates me how big the discrepancy is between a teacher/professor and research driven professor.

Under the right guidance I bet everyone in this thread could become a surgeon, but you would need the most compassionate and dedicated teachers working with you on a daily basis

1st 2 years of college i noticed teachers in all academic fields tend to haze you in the general classes to weed out the students. Once you get into your junior/senior level classes they tend to become easier just because you find them more interesting/have more dedication to do well in them... if that's not you then you might need to find a new major at this point

Eh, just the opposite. It puts extreme pressure upon you, works you hard enough that you have no time to relax or see friends, and forces you to deal with patients who will worsen any symptoms of depression.

I've just seen "Silence of the Lambs" (which is a great movie), but I don't look at Hannibal as an archetypal surgeon.

To be fair I can't think of an archetypal surgeon in fiction. Different breed than most can conceive.

Smoking, although they work together to produce cancer.

Not too familiar with surgical treatment of TMJ

wait that's not true i got B's in spanish, sophomore/junior english and uhh.. APUSH. That teacher was hard as fug tho

fellow medicine guy here

which types of threads do you open on Sup Forums and what is your favorite band?

when did you realise that you wanted to be a surgeon/go into the medical field?

some1's trying to be a trap

Or they are just that good at hiding who they really are ? What kind of porn do you watch

I've been wondering this. What is decent? Their are what 169 places in the us? Are top 10 good? Top 50 decent? You know what i mean. What is the breakdown?

yea, hoping a bit of bone removal will get me closer to the dream

He died, about a week after this pic. Cervical necrotizing fasciitis.

I agree with a lot of this, aside from the part about "anyone could be a surgeon".

It's not about being brilliant or inspired. It's about having a work ethic and masochism that eclipses everything else in your life.

I actually hang out on Sup Forums and Sup Forums more often.

Favorite band? Velvet Underground or Talking Heads.

Realized I wanted to go into medicine in college when I was doing course for my degree and I realized I would rather blow my fucking head off than do bench research for 50 years. Medical school seemed a cool thing to do rather than get a PhD in bullshit.

Realized I wanted to be a surgeon first time I stepped into OR as a first year med student. Nothing like it in the world. As a third and fourth year med student, actually operating on patients confirmed it. There is nothing in the world like healing with steel. Purest drug there is.

Hello OP.

How bad is Chewing tobacco for you?

Pic unrelated

>It's a brutal, difficult field. You probably won't like it. Few people do.

Why do you like it? And how did you know you'd like it? The one thing that intrigues me the most is why someone would put themselves through so many years of medical school and forgoing any personal time or social life to be a surgeon.

Is it for the cash? Just for helping people? Is the human body just too fucking fascinating to not wanna spend life studying it and everything that could go wrong with it?

Does gore bother you? Is there a higher rate of psychopathy among surgeons?

>masochism
well... study to be a surgeon (in some utopia) - no way we could all do that mentally...ripping people's body's open for fun and all :b...(and getting paid kek)

>
Get your study habits set in high school, so when you go to college you can rock it, you want a minimum 3.7 gpa and should do your best to ace every class, study hard for your mcat and then look up other requirements like volunteering and other extracurricular activities. If you do all that and get into medical school then you can start thinking about what specialty you want to go into, but you really need to ask yourself why you are doing this, because if you are doing it for money or status then you will dread your life, you have to have an undying passion for medicine to actually enjoy the endless work involved.

I've had a habit of shifting my jaw to pop or crinkle it for the last 10 years. Is that a normal thing to do or am I fucked?

Also, do you listen to music while you operate? If so, what?

What classifies as severely disadvantaged? I was chronically homeless during college, had no family support structure, 1st generation America, of super-poor socioeconomic status, and dealt with serve mental and physical pain after being blow up by an IED while serving in Afghanistan as a medic? I had 3.02. MCAT 36 on old one. Two years ago. And have been out of school for two years, working, and focusing on therapy. I'm thinking applying for 2018.

Decent what?

In terms of undergrad, I went to a top school. Med school was a good state school, but not Ivy League. Residency for ENT (

What drove you to become a doctor, and why this very specific subspecialty? Do you care about your patients or have you become numb to them? What do you think about the current healthcare system?

What is your personality type from Myers Briggs test?

What is the med school breakdown? When is a school good versus bad versus mediocre?

Okay, going to bed, folks.

Early morning tomorrow and long day to follow.

See you in a bit.

Do you have to be apathetic to be able to become a surgeon/doctor? Would my higher empathetic nature be a hindrance?
