It must have been a lie. Saying that to Sansa made him sound like an idiot...we're supposed to believe he's some kind of master of politics, he must realize that there is absolutely no path for him to take that kind of power. Even if it was a wild fantasy, he sounded like a dumbass when he said it out loud to Sansa, like telling someone you hardly know that you "make every decision hoping it furthers your goal of being president of the US".

I don't know why he isn't just happy with the Vale...he could easily continue wheedling until Sansa agrees to marry him. He has wealth, prestige, and a healthy and sizable military force. His attempt to kill or remove Jon is going to get him killed, probably by Sansa.

His thinking was that if he marries sansa then he becomes King in da norf. Plus the Vale, (harranhal?) if he has that too. He would be the most powerful dude outside of Kings landing, mix in a bit of caosh and he'd be on the iron throne.

I assume D&D are just building him up as the next major villain just to get offed at this point. That's the only explananation for his plan to have skipped a dozen or so steps. Compared to the book version he's acting like a fucking idiot rushing into everything, while book Littlefinger is sat comfortably in charge of the one place in Westeros untouched by war with Sansa under his thumb.

Littlefinger got to where he is by supporting the underdog and tipping the scales. He enjoys watching the successful and regal suffer, as he was an underdog his whole life. The Iron throne symbolizes beating all the nobles at their own game.

That is Littlefinger. He will turn on the winning side every time if it brings him closer, because he decries entitlement and all he wants in life is seeing entitled people kiss the ground.

Now that he sees Jon become the thing he hates most, he's likely to switch back to Cersei so he can:

1. See Cersei the entitled bitch beg

2. Beat Jon like he beat all the other entitled big guys who stole his pretty girl

3. Have a realistic shot at the throne, which he can't with Jon around. He can't kill Jon because people love Jon. But Cersei can go down and people will toss him the crown immediately.
