Glad to see this thread. I fucking champion this movie whenever I can. A proper film with a simple goal executed to perfection. I would've thought it wasn't eccentric or pretentious enough for this board to go in for it but it seems there are a handful of people with their head in the right place.

filming dark scenes saves the CGI budget. the more shadows and less you see, the less has to be animated. next time you see a movie or show and you think, "why the hell is this scene taking place at night?" you'll have your answer.

nah, Del Toro just loves rain - he has a window in his house that's rigged to make it seem like it's raining 24/7. he has dark rainy scenes in almost every movie he's ever made.

Honestly, Grown Ups 2 was better

It's not a very good movie. I'm not sure if it was the acting, writing, or both but the only characters who I enjoyed were the scientists and Ron Pearlman. Everyone else was so serious that it made them boring while the three that I liked seemed to understand the tone of the movie and put a lot of effort into their roles.

But it has creative ideas and I think del Toro put a lot of effort into building a world that seemed real so I was immersed in the film. I really like this movie but it has serious flaws.

MY biggest problem was that atmospheric fall.

Gypsy Danger falls from thousands of feet up and can survive because it fires its chest blaster?

This movie had some pacing issues and some bland main characters but honestly I think the good qualities really outweigh the bad. The action/fight scenes were superb, the film's aesthetics were top notch, all the side characters had a ton of personality, but most importantly it was fucking fun. I had fun watching this movie, which is what matters when the movie is a giant robot monster fight movie. If you don't like it because it isn't your thing, that's fine, but to say this movie is 'bad' doesn't really hold water IMO.

Ironically middle schoolers are the ones most concerned with appearing intelligent. Actual adults realise a movie about giant robots punching monsters in the face doesn't have to be 100% realistic.
