If she's originally european, she's excused actually.

a lot of european countries have the same greeting for both birthdays and other occasions, roughly translated "congratulations on your big day",

so it's easy for us to fall in the "happy birthday" trap.

It is a thing in polish. "Wszystkiego najlepszego" means pretty much "[I wish you] everything best" and is used as a "happy birthday" although that would be "wesołych urodzin" if you wanted to use something exactly like "happy birthday". The first term is a simple multitool you can use on other occasions.
