The celts used 10000x folded swords too. Look it up.

Yeah, they're useful and cool if you're fighting an unarmored chink. Looks like there were no plate armors back in the Edo age or something

How can chinks compete?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toledo_steel

>ywn cut down unarmoured chinks

well it's perfect for the battlefield of it's time, cutting through leather armor and flesh.
It sucks for anything else though.

Those two arent even comparable.

I guarantee you the Katana could cut through more things than that big ass chunk of metal.

I bet the specific katana must have been bought from a cheesy online shop run by some Chinese.

True Japanese katanas never bend like this after hitting something so hard.
They just chip in the blade to the point where it's unrepairable or completely snap into two pieces.
Also, needless to say, this idiot doesn't know how to swing a katana. One of typical barbaric Europeans who are only intellectually capable of using stone age weapons

Katanas should be used more like a saw to maximize their blade length.
You never beat with a katana like an hand axe or baseball bat. To make the blade glide fast on the surface during the moment of impact is the key for a clean cut, which is the functional purpose of katana.

Yes they aren't comparable. Euro long swords were thinner, sharper, lighter and had far better quality metal. Any Jap blade wouldn't be able to do more than a scratch without chipping apart. The design of Katana is also quite shit, bad hand guard, bad grip and weak curvature. I'm speaking of before industrialisation, versions of both today are not accurate.

face the facts, zipperheads. katanas are weak compared to strong european steel

>butthurt pole jelly of superior warrior and weapon again

As far as I remember the guy made both swords himself using the same techniques for each sword, and also used both japanese and german steel ore for each respective sword.

>europoors can't face historical facts

it worked pretty well to spics too though xD

B T F O ' D

Japs had to fold their steel because all the minerals on their shitty archipelago were basically useless and they had to make do with pig iron

wait japs ITT actually think their dogshit ancient weak design with crappy jap ore that couldn't be used to make decent metal so had to use an even more ancient inferior method, "sword" actually comes close to any main land asian or european weapon?

It's a ceremonial blade that was barely used, warfare in japan was narrow and ceremonial. Bows and spears were also the precedent. No one used swords as their primary weapon.

and they had too much crippling social anxiety to leave their island and ask their neighbors for better iron

ITT: buttmad jap spewing dumbshit

katana is superior to european swords, why is it so hard for people to understand that?
they literally didn't change the design or manufacturing process for a thousand years because they had already reached perfection
mongols (who beat any european army that they even bothered to fight) couldn't even reach japan because the samurari lined up on the coast and cut the water before the mongol ships even arrived, killing them all

>ITT

> the samurari lined up on the coast and cut the water before the mongol ships even arrived, killing them all

>strong european steel
Yeah, your steel might have been strong but it's just other civilizations had stronger steel and more sophisticated forging techniques, which was why Europe had been nothing but a forgettable shit swamp full of religious retards until the age of discovery

>other civilizations had stronger steel and more sophisticated forging techniques
no, european steel has been the best since the early middle ages

>well it's perfect for the battlefield of it's time, cutting through leather armor and flesh.
The Japanese didn't wear leather armour. At the time katana were around they wore mail armour reinforced with plates.

>Swedish steel from Kiruna mines
>Minimum amount of penalty elements like sulphur or quicksilver, naturally present manganese in favourable small amounts for steelmaking

>the first time Japan actually had some decent steel was when the black ships arrived and set a miniature railroad on the shogun's lawn. The tracks made of Swedish steel were later on used for swordmaking.

A drunk portuguese with a rapier would win easy against a honorary samurai with his legendary katana molded 1000 times from a legendary dwarf blacksmith on the mountains

Gaijin disonobru desu

peasants make the bulk of the army, european peasants wore leather and chainmail, japanese peasants didnt have any armour
katana is good because it was a cheap and replaceable weapon that was only as good as it needed to be (not very)
european swords were expensive, strong and utilitarian, it could be used to cut down a peasant or crush a knight through his armor

lmao, face the history, monkey
ibelian monkeys were literally a joke in the presence of samurai.
this is why king of spain shit his pants and directed his men not to fight samurai, and commanders in the pacific even paid tributes to japanese daimyo.

Indians are laughing under graves

...

>peasants make the bulk of the army
Peasant levies weren't all that common. One of the primary reasons why the nobility could justify their reign was because they took care of warfare. If the common men would have been able to fight, they wouldn't have needed the nobility for protection. The people who did the fighting were noblemen and their household troops. Later, mercenary troops became a most common sight on battlefields

>european peasants wore leather and chainmail
Leather armour wasn't all that common. A padded jack would have been the most common defence (and a fairly good one as well). Mail armour was fairly expensive.

>japanese peasants didnt have any armour
The ashigaru had their own kinds of armour as well.

>european swords were expensive, strong and utilitarian, it could be used to cut down a peasant or crush a knight through his armor
It depends on the time period. During the early middle ages, swords were expensive. But by the time of the late middle ages pretty much anyone, including common mercenaries had some kind of sword by their side. And when it comes to sword usage against armour: during the 13th century, we see rather hefty war swords to be used against mail armour, here it is possible that they were meant to deal damage through the armour, but as soon as plate armour was around, most depictions show swords being used to circumvent the armour rather than attempt to attack right through, e.g. by thrusting it in-between the gaps where the armour doesn't cover (pic).

that's chinese pirates, not even samurai nor japanese, retard
also, it's a well known historical fact that most of wakou pirates of the period was chinese in the disguise of japanese

>According to the History of Ming, thirty percent of the 16th century wokou were Japanese, seventy percent were ethnic Chinese.[14][15][16][17]
>Because of the extent of corruption in the Ming court, many Chinese officials actually had relations with the pirates and benefited from the piracy, making it difficult for central authorities to control.[18]
>Two well known Chinese military figures involved in the combating of Wokou are Qi Jiguang and Yu Dayou. Yu Dayou was a general of the Ming dynasty who was assigned to defend the coast against the Japanese pirates. In 1553, a young man named Qi Jiguang became Assistant Regional Military Commissioner of the Ming dynasty and was assigned to "punish the bandits and guard the people" which meant taking on the Japanese pirates attacking the Ming east coast. At the time he was only twenty-six years old. On the eve of the next year he was promoted to full Commissioner in Zhejiang because of his successes.[19]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wokou#Later_wokou

Wokou was just mixed-ethnicity pirates and illegal merchants of Chinese, Koreans and Japanese.
Kouki Wokou (late wokou, or 16th century wokou) is known to have almost dominantly consisted of Chinese and had few real Japanese members.

if there is no armor involved, the rapier is probably the best sword that has ever been made for a duel

lots of reach, nimble, plenty of hand protection, and enough weight that it can't simply be battered aside like a smallsword

I know this is stupid bait but katanas were made around a need at the time, same as every other weapon in history. It was good against simple armor, flesh and bone. They were made to give in the body of the sword but hold an edge well. They are a marvel of craftsmanship if made correctly but they aren't magic.

Once plate armor was a big thing, blunt and piercing weapons became more effective.

All so many people completely ignorant to swordery and forging always feel like they are entitled to give their shitty opinions on Katanas?

katana is entry level japanese sword. there are much more powerful swords such as furigana which can stop bullets

>WHY so many people**

...

europe has been extremely relevant for 2000 years, before that it was to cold to have a proper civilization

japan was literally knock-off china until the last century, and even now its mostly just knock-off america

All the folded steel in the world wont save you from a mace.

>this spic REALLY believes puny tercio was effective to samurai, while even an irrelevant expeditionary force for a daimyo's lulz had way more guns than the spics had ever used

>The Spanish tercios rarely had more than 1500 men. They were called tercios, meaning "thirds", because they were, in theory, made up originally of 1/3 pikemen, 1/3 swordsmen, and 1/3 of firearms.

>Japan became so enthusiastic about the new weapons that it possibly overtook every European country in absolute numbers produced.[10] Japan also used the guns in the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, in which about a quarter of the invasion force of 160,000 were gunners.[17]

hasn't japan like only ever won one proper war against westerners (WW1 doesn't count since you guys contributed less than us), and that was only against eastern russia in manchuria so not even

while europoors have NEVER won a 1v1 war against japan, and when they incurred the rage of the japanese dragon, they lost their colonies within like a week.

Britain and germany were able to fuck up china with ease (hell, the only reason japan had such an easy time against china in ww2 is because they had been fucked from every direction for the past few decades), undoubtedly they could have done the same to Japan but never bothered to since japan is a worthless island. America easily kicked Japans teeth in, and since germany was stronger than america before they pissed off the entirety of the western it stands to reason germany could have fucked japan as well

in reality the brits even got btfo by a fucking local daimyo before modernization, and japan had about 300 of those daimyos as well as a huge standing army of the shogunate's. and the ONLY reason why america could defeat japan in ww2 is because it wasn't the primary opponent of japan (and germany). japan had china as the primary opponent to which massive forces and resources were committed, and germany had russia as well, which enabled america to focus on mass production with impunity, pick vulnerable points created from over extension, and concentrate large forces to smaller japanese forces to create a massive numerical superiority.

first of all, it's not a war but just an irrelevant border conflict to which neither japan nor russia was really committed. tokyo hindered the army from expanding it.

secondly, it's not even a 1v1, since japan was fighting the second sino-japanese war (started in 1937) when it happened in 1939, while soviet, taking advantage of the opportunity, had way greater latitude for strategic options.

finally, soviet got more casualties despite japan's unfavorable situation, topkek

Katana weren't the weapon of choice when it came to war for a good deal of Japanese history.
It only became popular in the Edo period because it looked cool, and was easier for a samurai family to carry around, and pass down than a damn yari (spear) was.

>le samurais are le better
youtube.com/watch?v=TWiaRhQDZFE

At the risk of being called a weeb, let me point out that that result is completely expected for all the right reasons.

European swords were made to be heavier. It doesn't always make them better for different jobs. Also a good deal of Samurai had fairly okay armor. The sword was mainly useful for thrusting in between gaps if memory serves. As The Japanese didn't have full plate mail like Europe did, and instead relied on armor plating that contained a good many gaps.

Katana is most strongest sword, definitely.

youtube.com/watch?v=KczZPuRux9k

...

They srsly believe katana is better than nuke?

>damascus steel

>European swords were made to be heavier.
This is a bit of a myth though. The weight difference was negligible. In fact, the blades of European weapons were usually lighter if you actually put their weight in relation to their length. "heavy" is generally not a property you want in a weapon.

knight is so slow, how could they defeat the Samurai.

youtube.com/watch?v=tpjb5wG5l_U

I don't think a modern kendo fencer is representative of a historical samurai, and I don't see why a historical knight would be slow.

Katana is better than any Kimchi bike desu

what is this story????

katana better than nuke kimchi, it folded 4567374573 times and can cut through atoms

>peasants
>wore chainmail

Your common soldier wore a gambeson because chainmail was expensive and peasant soldiers in the sense ''some guy was just harvesting crops but local lord gave him a spear and told him to fight'' weren't used except in most desperate times simply because no one felt like sending people who are meant to farm his land into a meat grinder.

The "katana" everyone does on about was mainly used to cut flesh. Hell, most of these swords didn't even exist during the times when the Japanese clans were warring. Almost all of the samurai stuff people go on about is really just bushidou writings and the like, which was basically created as a means for the bushi caste to have some meaning in their otherwise then meaningless lives thanks to the change in Japanese social structure.
The swords which were historically used, at times -which wasn't anywhere near as much as people have made it out to be- were far longer than the swords which are used for comparisons and references.

In the various forms of body protection used over time, the most common was bamboo. You can see a similar sort of principle behind the stomach protection pieces used in kendou body armour, at least the older stuff when it was primarily bamboo and weaved fibres.
