>hungary

woah, what happened to them?
same thing in football

No physical culture.

Nazi Germany and hte Soviet Union were both highly successful sports nations during that period of time due to a large promotion of physical fitness, sports culture and unions and large emphasis on talent development.

>ywn see Ferenc Puskas play with don Alfredo

Germany has been consistently solid at the Olympics. Here's the 1904 Olympics held in America, where no one could be bothered to turn up.

the 20th century is basicly cheating lmao

Only shitholes like Russia and the US put millions of money and drugs into sports to get a better international image. Nazi Germany was the same, they wanted to prove how superior white people are. Nowadays we don't care about that anymore because we know we're the best country.

Anabolics were not synthesized until the 1950s and were not in common use until then.

The US also puts almost NO money into sports, though it is true that their anti-doping practices are also weak. Russia, much like other communist and former communist nations (some of it still survives in former Eastern Germany and ex-Soviets) do indeed have organized cheating that continues to this very day. However, another reason the Soviet Union was such a successful sports nation, compared to other large communist nations like China was in large part their promotion of physical and sports culture.

It's amazing what can happen when you have good funding in place, proper world class facilities, target and put effort into medals you know you have a chance at winning.

I don't know much about British sports culture, but that is very impressive indeed.

the usa is putting a lot of $$$ and effort in competetive sports
they don't care about the sport thou, it's about image
and not only about the image of the country, but also about capitalism, the american dream bullshit (work hard and you will rewarded...)
i've done my share of swimming, even for youth national teams and we can't compare with the big guys - no facillities, no good trainers, no good pre/post- medical care...Small nations can excel in some specific sports, or in less popular team sports (think water polo)

>the usa is putting a lot of $$$ and effort in competetive sports

I think he means in terms of Olympic sports, US athletes have to rely on sponsorship or by other means and don't get funded by the government.

USA is good at sports because swimming is over representated in the Olympics and that they're good at swimming.
Look at this ridiculously bloated list of events.

It's true, far too many swimming events. They had the cheek to remove some track cycling events to stop GB dominating too.

Yes, that's what I meant.

American athletes are well-funded, yes, but that funding is not from the government of the United States like in ex-Soviets, China, Iran etc.
Also large talent pool and extremely poor antidoping standards.

That's why the olympics doesn't really mean anything in term of number of medals
If you had 30 different events about napping, Spaniards would be first all the time.

funding of sports was drastically reduced and instead we are funding terrorists

if you are a full time sportsman (not talking about football, handball, basketball, etc) you are literally living in poverty. whereas in the US for example, you are living like a king

It's more that most Olympic sports are unpopular and receive too little funding. When it comes to football we (or rather the clubs) spend a lot of money on talent scouting, development, etc.

Overall, it's just a question of money.

>the current one started competing in 1992
>already up there
HOW CAN OTHER COUNTRIES EVEN COMPETE?

>Nowadays we don't care about that anymore because we know we're the best country.
No, you just turned into lazy, incompetent losers
you fucking potatos is there anything you don't suck at?

You can't go around combining countries/teams like that m8. Both west and east Germany sent their own athletes, so you're more or less doubling the athlete count and then adding the medals together. It'll be like if Great Britain suddenly combine their tally with another country.

Not to mentioned the rampant cheating and doping that went on in east Germany. tbqh east Germany and the Soviet Union should be stricken from the table all together.

why are c*nadians so bad at sports?

No. The Olympics were a political show because collecting medals 200m hurdles, 50m backstroke womens relays and etc was unironically a matter of national prestige with >implications. Once the cold war was over this started to fade away and the Olympics steadily began to turn into a sort of Eurovision contest as far as people is concerned.
