Ween are indeed my favorite band and by far the most meaningful band in my life. I always feel such a strong attachment to their music beyond any other artist, and their music has always kept me above water during every single period of my life since I first heard them. Many of my closest friendships were established from meeting other Ween fans. Hell, one of the reasons I started talking to my first girlfriend was because she was a Ween fan.
I could list a ton of reasons why Ween means so much to me, but it mostly boils down to one fundamental thing. To me, Ween are a band that represent my absolute favorite thing in music, which is creativity. The thing that originally drew me to Ween so much was just how much boundless creativity they had. They were always trying new things and taking on whatever musical approach they wanted to, from absurd lo-fi experimental, to pure country, to amazingly catchy pop songs, to pretty much anything else they felt like. There are very few artists that have ever quite matched the level of pure creativity and imagination that Ween had.

So basically, I love Ween to death and I can't imagine what my life would be like without them.

Sometimes, young adults can have desires that are contrary to what they are taught is popular or normal - So, they create the avant rym persona in order to rationalize "It's not actually me that wants those things, it's not me that's doing them. I would never. It's this other being; this avant thing." Basically it's a coping mechanism for cognitive dissonance.

Maybe I'm over-analyzing it, but that is what I eventually came up with. In the group of friends I fell into on RYM, there were mostly those people, but there were a few people that just actually liked avant music, too, though those people were uncommon.

Well, personally it took me a while to get into that type of music, I was already listening to quite a bit of "semi" avant music before hand though which made it more accessible. Before I started listening to EAI and such I was listening to stuff like "experimental rock", noisy music, and was already acquainted with a bit of electronic music that is somewhat experimental, like Autechre. If you just want to dive into it head first without any prior context it might be hard to get into but just start with some of the more popular releases, and if you don't like anything then try again later, if that doesn't work then maybe you just don't like this stuff much.

Oops, I read your post wrong, I thought you were asking how to get into EAI and other avant-music. Well the point remains for others anyway.

Jazz only in groove, this ECM release from 2008 puts a modern twist on the ideas of Eberhard Weber and Jan Garbarek, mixing jazz instrumentation with a minimalistic layered approach. Despite being a jazz album on paper, the heavy production and meticulous composition combined with the deficiency of improv elements means this record can only be described to those not versed with the ECM label as “groovy classical with jazz instruments”.

Pairing it’s minimalistic instrument lines with uncommon varied time signatures gives this a polyrhythmic feel at times, and sucks you in to it’s hypnotic phase shifting melody. The minimalism elements are handled well, allowing slow layered builds for tension and sudden relief as the melody is instantaneously stripped back to it’s root.

The drumming definitely comes off more post-rocky than jazzy, but compliments the atmosphere well and is varied in technique and approach. The other instruments are almost always playing patterns, so the variation in harmony comes from layer splicing or occasional outlying instruments, which may be improvised, or composed to sound improvised. The layering and production is incredibly pleasing to listen to, and each song is unique and memorable on it’s own.

It’s really all about the gnarly bass lines on this. Recommended.
