>tfw when you teach your friend how to play a few chords and do a cover of one song and he ends up being a better songwriter than you even though you've been playing since 13 years old.
Tfw when you teach your friend how to play a few chords and do a cover of one song and he ends up being a better...
I have a similar experience.
>tfw thought a skinnyfag at freshman how to lift and he ends up competing in power-meets while I'm still here struggling with my gains
*taught*
You should just be in his band so you can ride along for the popularity and money if you guys make it big.
You fucking talentless hack
Why don't you start a band with him user?
Start a band with him, its not too late
Actually he asked me too because he likes my playing.
But I still feel weird....
I was supposed to be the gifted songwriter
I mean wtf he just started playing in the last month and he's 19 & ive been playing since I was 13.
Not everyone's meant to be the captain of the team bro. Just the way it is
Well your probably a better guitar player. Jump aboard and see where it goes.
start a band and get pussy
who cares
Join and work on being an arranger or producer or something. Songwriting isn't everything in a band. Look at the Police, Sting wrote the songs, but without Andy & Stewart he's nowhere near as good.
Yeah, but creatively I'm shit.
Who cares? You found you're perfect musical partner. Hell, you created him.
Yeah i know.
We're actually very good friends.
So it's not like he's not random guy I'm just in a weird space right now.
it's a band dude, just make some tunes together and see how it goes
it genuinely sounds like you want to suck his dick
This. But he tries to kick you out just give him the ol' sucky sucky
No Im just very envious of this fuckers Talent
>tfw friend plays guitar pretty well growing, myself being a noob at it in hs
>now my friend and I can jam pretty well together, but we're both pretty rusty
Feels good mang.
is talent a code word for penis
why do you guys think I'm gay for him?
I have a friend like this. It's weird. It's like he can write gold everytime and when I ask him how he writes songs he just says he plays, finds a riff he likes, and just hums melodies till pictures pop into his head.
I really want to pick his brain more and learn how to write my own like his.
Because you're posting a out how mirrin you are on a Chinese cartoon message board
Well honestly I'm starting to look at the bright side of this. I'll deal with the technical side of our songs and hell of course write the melodies, riffs, etc.
You're probably just more self critical than he is. You're overthinking things while he lets ideas and emotions flow out.
You can probably both learn a lot from each other. Start that band with him.
>tfw no one matches my talent at guitar technically or songwriting wise locally
>tfw any time I started a band I felt like I was with a bunch of people below my talent level
Youre a nobody, you have no charisma or talent, but you met someone who does, and if hes a friend why not making the band? Face the reality you suck he rocks
we are in a band together.
HOLY FUCK OP U JUST GOT REKT
Just some advice, the more you play with more and more people you'll not only get better, but the people you're playing with can improve. Musicians should play with as many other musicians as possible.
Just start a band, recruit a qt that plays keyboards when you will be good enough for touring, and make an ebin sound collage 15 years later with sad drones and the tapes of the qt's dad who was actually working at the FBI interviewing informants before he died due to diabetes or alcoholism complications.
You can do it, bro.
(O PE) ON SUICIDE WATCH
wtf i'm not michael gira!
i get it now hahaha
>Playing bass with a shitty guitarist for over a year
>Occasionally he'll try to play 'rhythm' or keyboard while I solo
>He never plays a consistent pattern so nothing I ever play over the top has a chance to resolve
>He finally hears me improvise over a recording
>OMG your soloing has gotten so much better
NO MOTHER FUCKER, YOU'VE JUST ACTUALLY HEARD ME PLAY
Honestly the locals are really REALLY bad
It's small town syndrome where their friends never told them they sucked so they stewed in mediocrity. Seriously, most of them struggle with rhythm
The one band I had that never quite formed properly was me and this other kid who was about as talented as me in different aspects and we had a blast jamming, but we had a falling out and now I'm by my lonely yet again.
The last time I played with another musician was at a family campfire strumming acoustics lmao
MUH SWANZ
If that's really the case then he is obvisouly more passionate about music than you ever were.
Being in a small town band is awful
>form multiple bands over the years
>me and other guitarists
>other guitarists are always useless bassists
>get stuck on bass by default
>only play songs where I'm stuck playing root notes in 8ths
>every single time
Hello Fripp
not op , but it seems like OP is butthurt someone with natural talent came along. because OP had this idea in his head that he was gods gift to the world because he'd been training since he was a kid. so basically OP just got tea bagged and fucked by reality
What's the nearest big city? If you're close to a bigger city drive out there and busk somewhere for a day/find an open mic and show your stuff. Got to be brave because life is short and being a musician is competitive/cooperative at the same time.
Also, I suppose if there's anyone you meet with some innate talent in your town (and don't think too high and mighty about yourself) get them to jam with you. If someone isn't comping right/can't seem to match, just teach them. It'll make you and them better.
I had a friend like that, but a few months ago I saw him playing with his band (which are friends of ours) and I was pretty surprised.
He was mostly playing basic riffs repeatedly, but it was tight and you could see his love for black metal and psychedelic/stoner stuff at the same time in those songs they more or less composed and improvised.
I think I make some interesting stuff with my computer and my guitar, but I felt like I was maybe the loser actually that day.
lol all these fuckers trying to shit on OP has me laffin for some reason
I'll tell you a story OP
I had a similar experience but the difference was I never tried to write a song really. I wrote some riffs, I even had a relatively fleshed out little instrumental piece that I could play. But I had never sat down and tried to piece together chords and lyrics an alldat
I met this kid
I referred to in this post
and this guy was making albums by himself, playing guitar and adding a drum machine or just shittly recording his drum set himself. And it was cool af, and I thought, man this guy is way more talented than me.
And as I hung out more with him, I started to realized that one creative burst gave way to mediocrity. He began playing the same stuff over and over, and writing the same riff over and over, he could only jam one thing. And then I started trying to write up some stuff. And I realized it's not as hard as I thought it was. Songwriting is a skill, and while a kid like him may be talented at first, you can surpass them if you put the work in. Some are naturally gifted, others have to work a lot, but it can be done.
yeah, i get what you're saying.
its just crazy to me that in one fucking month he has three great songs. albeit their short songs & he's still fucking rusty on the guitar but still that was pretty impressive.
>Been learning guitar for a couple years
>Best friend always thought it was cool to see me play since he saw me improve from the start
>Asks me to teach him guitar
>Everytime we hang out we play together, stop playing vidya and enjoy listening and making music together
>I preety much only play with him because it's so much more fun than playing alone
>He pushes himself because it's because of him we can't play more advanced songs
>I push myself too now so I can still be the master and he has more to learn because apart from learning songs i'm the one that teaches him all he knows
>Every day we hang out he's learnt a couple new songs and I struggle to find songs I actually wanna play
>I'm preety much thrice as advanced in guitar playing than when I started teaching him and he's almost in my level
>He died october of last year on a bus accident
>Never again have had any drive to pick up a guitar again
haha us guitarists amiright?
I do have a friend that is a talented rapper and we make music together, I also make beats so I have that option as well.
I've learned that innate talent is hard to come by, and when you do come by it it's hardly ever practiced. The kids who play a lot but aren't shit at what they do are very common though.
that fucking sucks man.
I look at it as a competition
I know that seems backwards in todays society but music to me is a competitive thing. If someone was better than me at something in music I strive to be better than them at it.
I'm not good at sports or athletic really, so that's where my competitiveness goes to.
So start writing, and start writing better songs than him.
I've cycled through a lot of people to comp for my projects and I find that even a shit musician can do something if you give them the right instruction. It's just about finding the thing they can do alright and pushing them into that role.
The only irreplaceable talent would be a good drummer/a real bass player rather than a guitarist imitating a bass player.
Damn that's fucking sad.
But I'm sure picking up your guitar from times to times would make him happy, from wherever he might be now.
I've come to terms with it so I'm in a good place but it sucks having these three guitars collecting dust, maybe I'll give them away
What separates a real bass player from a guitarist imitating one?
I ask because I play both.
and I would agree, good drummers are hard to come by.
I've only met one, and I consider myself a decent drummer.
There was one I met who was -technically- good but his playing was so robotic it hurt. Like he'd literally just cycle between the beats he knew in a jam every four bars, and he wasn't always in time with the rest of the band either
Keep them dude.
Join him, I got fucked into playing bass when I at least wanted to play rhythm guitar but our current rhythm guitar player can barely learn chords, read notes, differntiate tones and improvise but since he's spend $3,000 on his setup the position went to the highest bidder. Our lead guitarist is 3 years younger than us and a decade better since he's been studying jazz and music theory since he was 11, at least I get to be the lead singer though.
I'm in a side project with a friend who isn't the strongest Musician but it's nice to have someone help my creativity and feed off each of our ideas, we share singing and I get to play Lead. We've been on a roll since we started last november and have an EP coming out soon that I feel is higher quality than my other band
>a real bass player rather than a guitarist imitating a bass player.
This guy knows whats up
Dude you have a chance I've never had, a best friend to create music with, almost EVERY successful band has been formed by two best friends. Just buckle up and go along for the ride, you will also have a platform to show your own songs as well and maybe he can give you pointers on his creative process so you can see eye to eye
>What separates a real bass player from a guitarist imitating one?
It's hard to explain. A guitarist who plays bass sounds just like that-- a guitarist playing bass. In contrast, a bassist who specializes in just that instrument has a completely different feel and approach, will have a more intricate style and rhythm as compared to the guitarist.
I started by writing my own songs at age 11 by learning Nirvana and AC/DC songs and writing my own lyrics. Then get used to listening to a recording of my playing and hummming along till it fits, buy a looper pedal if you play guitar it does wonders.
I still play songs we liked to play and some we wrote to friends sometimes, but I have no drive to actually pick up a guitar and write or get better
I wouldn't give them away because it's sad but it'd feel nice knowing that someone who's playing them has them
Interesting
Personally I have more fun with bass lately and I feel more at home with it. I didn't start out with it but I think I play it much differently than I do a guitar.
Real bass players know how to groove/fill their role as a bass player. They can click with the drummer and keep the rhythm section solid. They also play with some theory behind their belt.
Just to be concise
1. Goove
2. click with drummer/excellent timing
3. Knows what to play and why to play it
There can be more melodic bass players but it's good if they know that they're a bass player before anything else. That in mind, it's fine to break rules in music.
Well, it's a general statement, so obviously there are cases that go against that rule. You very well may. But in my experience (been playing bass for 20 years, guitar for 11) an average guitarist playing bass will always frame the bass part in the context of the guitar. A specialized bassist will frame the bass to frame the rhythm and also to create it's own identity. Does that make scene?
Again, you might be able to do both, I've seen people do it. But MOST of the time I hear a guitarist play bass, I can tell.
I did not expect that fucking ending
He would've wanted you to continue playing and learning user
Do it for him
Where do you put a bass player like Les Claypool?
yeah man I'm getting over it already
. I'm optimistic for what's gonna happen
I wouldn't let that discourage you at all. Just sit down and try writing something every day or whenever you get some free time.
I knew someone kind of like that. They had only been playing for a few months and were already writing decent to really good songs but they were shit at the guitar. Just take it as inspiration to write something yourself.
Even though I think I have a shit voice I started coming up with chord progressions and singing along to them anyway and realized I had the ability to write songs as well. The difference was I started playing the guitar to be a guitarist. Some people start playing because they want to be singer/songwriters. I just hadn't thought to try my hand at that angle until much later.
Well actually vocals aren't the problem for either of us . I have a nice soft tenor voice & he has nice rasp to his so it shouldn't be a problem. Writing songs are is the main issue
DO IT, write songs with each other present and going back and forth in ideas and eventually you'll share the same creative mind and see the world with the same pair of thick rimmed glasses and become an unstoppable songwriting Duo and your fans will compare you to Paul and John, sure their will be arguments on who is better but at least your cooperation will overshadow your competition. Good luck to you and don't get shot
This our new bandmate starting churning our songs and it made me go into overdrive into songwriting because i have that "hold my beer I can do that better" mindset. Our second EP has mainly my songs or have been heavily influenced by me now and our singles are getting good reception
This is an interesting subject actually. The sort of science behind writing music.
How do you guys do when you write your music?
I usually just improvise lyrics and melody while playing guitar and then I sometimes get a feeling that I'm creating something really good and that becomes a song in the end.
I read about how Jeff Mangum writes his songs and he basically just said that he hears the music in his head before it becomes.
Any of you wanna go through your creative processes?
It's quite interesting insight to have.
Haha that last bit though
how much time a day do you spend writing?
When I'm not at work. It's all day.
Not OP but I play covers and sometimes switch the chords around and/or play different chords
And then you hear a few note sequences that sound cool and let your mind modulate from there or something?
I usually get the most creative when I'm REALLY inspired or into a band. I'll listen to a few songs and then suddenly get overwhelmed with the urge to grab a guitar and start thinking of shit.
Funny thing is that the songs I come up with never sound much like whatever band/artist influenced me in the first place. Which is kind of a good thing really.
Occassionally I will hear something in my head that will become a song or part of a song. However, this can be really frustrating if I'm at work or somewhere that I can't grab a guitar right away as the idea tends to fade as quickly as it came to me. So be prepared to go into a bathroom and hum an idea to your phone if you have to.
Do you actually write music? How many songs have you written? How many have you shown to people? Sounds like your friend may just have confidence and/or feels comfortable showing you his songs.
You could always tell him he's terrible and discourage him from bettering himself.
I mean i have maybe 1200 voice memos so I think I document well enough.
I have music going on in my head all the time. Like notes just waiting to be connected. It's like something could be made from most anything I'll record but I'm slowly realizing what's supposed to go where and finding new beauty in things I recorded in a eureka moment a year ago and then completely forgot.
Yeah like this one time i was learning how to play a heavy metal song and I ended up making some dream pop riff
If I wanted to I would of told him that when he first showed me, but I'm not a dick. I actually want to play music with him we get along like brothers.
I accidentally replied to myself
Read this
I don't really even understand what a riff is honestly. I only really write music in chords usually.
I do try to find interesting ways to play the chords to create cool moods though, otherwise I just let the music become by letting my muscle memory strum while my mind is set on singing and it usually works with the music.
holy shit you're being a pussy
be happy for your friend and worry about you you fucking snake
In 1975 I walked Bob Dylan on stage!
Who the hell are you? You're a nobody!
This
You should be glad your friend is doing well. Now go get better
You miserable good-for-nothing no talent!
