Hair metal bands were just riding off the fumes of Led Zeppelin and Exile-era Stones. RHCP had a lighter, more punk-flavored approach. Their main influences were the Stooges, Butthole Surfers, Misfits, etc plus hip-hop influences and a sound that just seemed a little bit more modern and "alternative" than the heavy metal thud bands. Of course John Frusciante was also a one-of-a-kind talent who gave them a pop sensibility they'd never had before.
