Listening to this right now, I think I'm too late to the party because it sounds generic and boring.

>generic

you could criticize MBDTF in a lot of ways but "generic" is the last thing you can say about it with validity

...

When that album was released

pauls boutique

OP is why the genre is so weak,, I'm done.

How the fuck do you figure?

...

I am going to skip the "what" question and move on to "WHY?"

that depends on what you define as art.
if pure art is something that exists maily to "be" art and provoke a feeling, devoid of ego and ambition,
then we can ask the question if any music is really art.
if it has to be high art, then it has to transcend cultural class.

maybe some aesop rock can qualify just based on the lyrical complexity
maybe theatrical pieces, where a character is played to remove any personal gain or fame from the equation, like madvillainy could apply

fuck who knows

why does anything have to be art?

REEEEEEEEEEEEE

The late 80s when it evolved from being a weird form of party DJing. KRS, big daddy kane, Scarface and others from that era made it art. The 90s was just more conceptual and refined and the new millennium has started the splitting of it into sub-genres.
