Phil Elverum albums have the melodic complexity of a train horn (actually less; train horns often are tuned to a tritone, which seem to be absent in their music) and the lyrical complexity barely goes beyond a 3rd grade vocabulary. Not only is this music intended for ignorant audiences, it's intended to provoke ignorant young people to sleep in their beds all day and cry over their imaginary dead wife. How's that for an unpopular opinion?

With the upmost respect for the passing of Phil's former wife but the album just... sucks, both artistically and morally. The abandonment of your most cherished privilege in life doesn't ever justify an entirely self serving/sabotaging descent into a meaningless oblivion, how understandable it all might be. In case you're oblivious and/or interested in how an honorable individual deals with a similar occurrence in life, I highly recommend Emma Pollock's album from last year. An incredibly enchanting masterpiece that personifies the vast majority of the most essential human qualities, it's gut wrenching, heart warming, mind blowing, expertly crafted in a period of four years and naturally surpasses Mount Eerie's emotionally perverted pity party on each and every level.

Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Indie critics are still blinded by commercial success. Phil Everum sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Indie critics are often totally ignorant of the indie music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that Phil Everum did anything worthy of being saved.
